We seem to keep regressing to dressing up as priests and nuns again!

That's a great idea Jerry . . my cousin has one of those catamaran type things with a bike on each end . . . but we'd have to steer in International waters otherwise we might be shot! Bit far out.

Also it defeats the object of seeing the coastline, wildlife, flora/fauna etc

Still need to get over the "border" without resorting to a major diversion like Nicosia though . .

Does anyone know the distance?

Also what practical measures should I take . . . e.g. any authorities to notify? . . . permits to be sought? etc.

phoenix, on a more serious note (and may I congratulate you on your intended expedition?) I would like to sponsor you at 10 cents per Km, the proceeds to go to 'miltiades's' Cancer Tulip charity fund.

I already make donations elsewhere but feel that this may be a venture worthy of attachment to such a cause, what do you think ?. :)

Do the trip the other way round.
Start Kato Pyrgos, around Akamas and all the way to Larnaca, cross at Pyla and to Famagusta and all the north coast to Kato Pyrgos Border. I don't know how you will get back though.

Given all the trouble a cyclist would have to go through dealing with Turkish sour grapes one might aswell row right around Cyprus in less time.

Well that may be so but we are not defeatists . .

We are presented with obstacles, but I'm not throwing in the towel (well not until it's sweaty  ).

Just a little planning that's all we need.

I hadn't seriously thought of sponsorship . . . this was just personal wish fulfillment.

But Humanist is interested too . . so we'll consider sponsorship . . perhaps for a later tour which would also give us more time for organising sponsorship.

I may need to do a reconnaissance tour first to iron out problems.

Just whilst we're on the subject I tend to only support animal charities as I am VERY strongly against vivisection.

Most Cancer Research Charities still unnecessarily use animal models in their studies. So I will look into Miltiades' Tulip Charity . . if the funds go towards those afflicted rather than to Research . . . then I'm in.

...and eliko is talking of the National Guard, I presume

It sound like a lovely venture, Phoenix. With your camera and note book at the ready, I will be the first to buy your book. (you will write about the trip for sure) Good luck.

denizaksulu, just ask yourself this question :-

"What would 'I' do if I was on guard in the middle of the night and was approached by the 'Ghost ' of Makarios riding a bike !"

I'd say 'yiasou koumbare, buene bais? 'Are you kidding me? You believe in ghosts but I dont. I'd probably have a great laugh at somebody' s sense of humour.

You would probaly shoot the poor prankster - depending of course where your loyalties were.  I am still laughing, as I keep on remembering our village priest on his donkey and waving his greetings at us.
