Cycling the Cypriot Coastline . . .

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Phoenix I wouldn't mind doing the whole Island, via coastal routes. Do you know Cyprus' 648 km coastline is half the distance betten Sydney and Adelaide just thta alone is enough to encourage anyone to do it. Wil the Turks allow us though to cross through if there are no check points. For example around the Varosha area and then over near Akamas (Kato Pyrgos).

. . . or as many as wish to join us along the way . . TCs included (if they behave!).

Your points regarding going through the occupied sections are what I want to sort out. Maybe someone has some information on this.

Kato Pyrgos is the last point before Kokkina right?

Would we have to cycle around the periphery of Kokkina? (quite hilly) . . but lovely.

Hmm... perhaps VP can arrange to have a few napalms dropped here and there to relive the Kokkina experience...

Hhhmmm we shall have to peddle faster!

What about those land mines you mentioned. They don't go all the way to the edge of the coastline do they?

 I'm afraid so...

I have a gut feeling you'll need UN clearance to cross off-road.

Kato Pyrgos is the last village before the green line. After Latsi and Pomos you have to take the mountain road around Kokkina and then down to Kato Pyrgos. Kokkina is a free standing Turkish navel base not joined to the the north. I did this trip 2 weeks ago and definitely wouldn't do it on a bike. It's a beautiful part of the world and Kato Pyrgos has some nice cheap hotels you can stay in.
My main concern of this kind of an adventure would be safety from other drivers, as the roads are narrow and the drivers are impatient.

Hopefully there would be a few of us cycling together by then and will be easy to spot on the roads. :D

It's sounds from what you say that going round our coastline will be impossible at Kokkina so we will have to make a detour inland for a bit.

But once we are at Kato Pyrgos, I seem to remember from 5 years ago when I was last there, that there is just a lone Cypriot soldier in a sentry box. I guess we won't be able to cross the "border" here . . is that right?

Would we have to go all the way to Nicosia to actually cross over to the occupied section? :?

You will able to go round Kokkina but it's very steep uphills and nasty downhills, I was actually referring to myself (not being fit at all) about not attempting that passage. :)

About crossing the line, I really can't help you there but it sure is a hell of a long way to Nicosia (about 2 hours drive).

So there would be now way to access the northern coastline but to find a way to go back inland to Nicosia to cross the "border".

Then find a way back to the West coast to Kato Pyrgos but in the occupied side and then resume the cycle tour along the coast of Morphou bay and head Northwards.

Does anyone have any alternative suggestions towards a way of crossing over the obstacle at Kato Pyrgos?

Hey, I've got a better idea, if you like pedalling go around the coast on pedalos - it's much flatter :D
