[edit] The flag of Cyprus
The Flag of Cyprus came into use on August 16, 1960, under the Zürich and London Agreements. The flag features a georaphic depiction of the island over two olive branches symbolising peace. The background is white, also a symbol of peace. Cyprus is the only country to display its land area on its flag. The geographic depiction on the flag is shown in copper-yellow, symbolizing the island's large deposits of copper ore for which Cyprus is said to be named.

Before the flag of Cyprus was introduced, the flags of Greece and Turkey were used. The current flag was created as the result of a design competition in 1960. Under the constitution, the flag should not include the colors blue or red (the colors of the flags of Greece and Turkey) and should not portray a cross or a crescent. All participants avoided use of these elements in order to make the flag "neutral".

The winning design was based on a proposal by İsmet Güney, a Turkish Cypriot painter. The design was chosen by Makarios III, the President of Cyprus, with the consent of Vice President Fazil Küçük.

sorry bro ...me and thousands like me ...recognise this flag but prefer the old Helenic blue and white cross ... i respect my flag ...but this fact ...puts me off it ...

sorry i agree to disagree ...would the jews or the arabs accept a flag designed by their opposites ..i dont think so ...did the croatians live under serb flag .... etc etc ...

the Turkish cyps mock our yellow and white flag why ? white for surrender ,yellow for cowards ..think about it ...

being a apoel fan you should understand this ~~~ tell you what convince the TRNC ..to accept a flag decided by a greek cypriot for them ...would they do that ...well i dont think so son ...

rise and shine

Oranos64, it can then be said that if you like the blue and white flag so much, then why don't you go live where it is the official national flag: Greece? If you wish to live in Cyprus, then the Cypriot flag is the one that you live under. In any case, it does not matter who designs a flag. What matters is what the flag symbolizes.

utu ...where do you live ... i live in cyprus ..i use to live in the UK/US

Now as i was saying ...pre 1960 .... the flag of cyprus was Greek and the TURKS had their own flags in their own communities .

when you ever come over to cyprus ...you will see many homes and buildings etc ...with the Greek flag up ..please feel free to do some research ... i parade both flags ... I just feel it is my right to discuss my view and why i dislike and find it funny that the Greek cypriots are parading a flag designed ...by well ..the ENEMY ...

would the Turkish cypriots parade under a flag designed by a Greek er no ...only the Greek cypriots ..well we do have culture of "i cant be bothered etc " so many people are asking for a flag change in cyprus and something that reflects our largely christian faith ...much the way THE TRNC ...HAVE ISLAMIC SYMBOLS

hows canada pal ? are the french canadians still asking for recognition ..etc etc

We got your land and are selling it to forigners? What messge is sent to the south and what plans would the south reasonably be expected to make when they see that flag every day? In this footbal minded approach to politics what would be the expected response?

Hey Nikitas, as far as I know the flag was an answer to the "Enosis" that GCs had written up on the mountains.
