Postby geordieboy » Wed Sep 26, 2007 2:52 pm

Dear All

Could anyone please tell me how easy it is to gain employment in a cypriot casino, if you are a uk resident?

Any help on this matter would be appreciated.

Geordieboy.

Why Turkish?

Postby Tim Drayton » Thu Sep 27, 2007 8:37 am

Since locals are legally prohibited from gambling in casinos in the north of Cyprus, I don't see why you would need to speak Turkish to work in a casino there. These operations are targeted entirely towards foreign tourists - although I suppose that mainland Turks must also frequent them. I would have thought that a knowledge of Greek would be more useful, as a lot of the clientele at these places are Greek Cypriots. I believe that casinos in the north of Cyprus are permitted to employ a certain quota of foreign staff. Why don't you approach casinos directly for a job and see what the result is?

A newly opened casino was recently advertising for staff, but the advert did state preference is given to Turkish Cypriots. They do accept "foreigners" but are reluctant to pay for work permits. It is not easy here in the North to get legal employment.

Cyprus Bookies Welcome Gambling Proposals
26 September 2005

CYPRUS – As reported by the Cyprus Mail: "Two of the biggest betting companies in Cyprus have come out in favour of a proposal for a new law governing gambling. The law, which is currently being drafted, will see tax reduced or abolished, the opening up of the market, allowing other operators to stage races, and foreign bets allowed.

"Loukis Ioannou of Megabet yesterday told the Cyprus Mail, 'this legislation should have already been introduced. It's good for the market and in my opinion, the main aim is to stop illegal betting, which is the biggest problem in our industry.'

"…The General Manager of Royal Highgate, Yiannakis Pavlides joined Ioannou in support of the changes. 'By reducing tax, illegal betting will be clamped down on. We are the only country in the EU with such high taxes, specifically 25 per cent on football bets, which drives people underground. I am in agreement with abolishing the tax and I also support placing bets on foreign horse races, as this will give more opportunities to players, who won't have to go online. At the moment we only have a certain amount of games available to players, but if the law is more flexible we will have the opportunity to introduce new games and bets.'

"Loukis Ioannou" does not sound like a Turkish name.

It seems that the GC "government" has abolished gambling taxes in South Greek Cyprus to stop GCs going to the TRNC for their gambling habits and helping the TRNC economy.

Geordie Boy, If you contact the Pia Bella hotel, it is their casino that was advertising (I cant recall which newspaper - sorry). The casino is in central Kyrenia. November in Cyprus? warm days, cool nights, occassional rain. Pia Bella number: 009 392815 5321. If you pm me your email address I will send you phone numbers of more casinos. Goood luck!!
