Discussion, Debate, or something else?

Postby utu » Wed Sep 26, 2007 12:34 am

I'm a newcomer to this forum. After reading the various threads and the replys within them, I have to say that I am not overly impressed with it. This forum - I understand - is for the purpose of discussing the Cyprus issue and exchanging ideas. It seems like the predominant items being exchanged instead are insults and threats.

The essence of democracy is to hear both sides on an argument so that a rational decision can be made. After reading your posts, all that is coming out from this forum is not healthy debate, but inflamed rhetoric from entrenched positions, and a mutual hostility towards those with more moderate views. Not exactly a convivial atmosphere.

If this forum is an example of the prevailing opinions held on the island, then all I can say is that a dose of rationality is well overdue.

I think that we are all agreed that there is a problem, Zan. The question is how to deal with it. Both sides say that they are right. It kind of makes the quest for a solution rather difficult.

British Columbia is a province of Canada. Victoria is the capital (where I live).

Phoenix,

Some of the posts I have read on this forum don't sound 'fun' to me. A lot of them were depressing to say the least. It's almost like taking a risk making one's stance known at the outset, but then again, can one sit on the fence with an issue such as Cyprus? Both sides beleive in the righteousness of their cause, and that has resulted in some pretty nasty posts, not to mention abusive and threatening - from both sides. Not healthy.

As I said...Welcome to the Cyprob...Your predicament is what every one that ventures into this mess faces...The point is which one are you going to prove wrong...

Being told that I am wrong on an opinion is one thing, but there have been posts in this forum that have gone beyond just saying that. I like to be able to discuss an issue without having to put up with attacks of that nature. Agreed, this issue is a touchy one, but posts like that don't help anything and can prove detrimental in the long run.

Well, you just either toughen up or avoid the political threads.
