EC outlines details of aid package to Turkish Cypriots

24/09/2007

The European Commission has provided details regarding its EUR 259 mln aid package for Turkish Cypriots on the first anniversary of the approval of the funds. Out of the EUR 259 million, EUR 240,15 has been allocated to the operational part of the aid programme whereas the remainder EUR 18,85 (i.e. 7.2% of the overall financial allocation) will be used to support the implementation of the aid programme by the Commission in line with the provisions of Article 4(3) of the aid regulation.

Objective 1: Developing and restructuring of infrastructure (approx. EUR 129,25

million): Under this priority objective, the programme aims to redress the serious gaps in

infrastructure provisions existing in the northern part of Cyprus in key sectors such as environment (and in particular water and sanitation, solid waste and nature protection), energy (with particular attention to supply and demand management issues), traffic safety and telecommunication. Following years of underinvestment and neglect, key infrastructure sectors are in need of rehabilitation and upgrading to meet the demands of the acquis communautaire.

Objective 2: Promoting social and economic development (approx. EUR 70.2 million): This priority covers a broad range of activities aiming to enhance long term economic sustainability of the Turkish Cypriot community

Objective 3: Fostering reconciliation, confidence building measures, and support to civil society (approx. EUR 13 million):

Objective 4: Bringing the Turkish Cypriot community closer to the European Union (approx. EUR 9.5 million):

Objective 5: Preparing the Turkish Cypriot community to introduce and implement the acquis communautaire (approx. EUR 13.46 million):

Perhaps you guys don't even know it is the Republic of Cyprus that arranged the 259 million Euros for the TCs?

Yet their administration was always saying no, we will not accept it, we want either all the package (direct trade+direct flights+Euro 259m) or nothing??

If yes how the hell have you passed the exams to participate in such a highly political forum?

It is an EU part of an aid package that was accepted and supported by the ROC. The ROC knows perfectly well that if the " GDP " of the occupied part was to remain static or decrease to the levels of that of Turkey (currently at less than a third of that of Cyprus - World Bank ) it would mean an ever increasing reluctance by the T/Cs for a change , and a continued reliance on Turkey's financial assistance. The ROC must do all it can to help , through the EU , the economic progress of the T/Cs.

You are a funny guy with your half truths

The "RoC" has placed itself into a position in which it says it represents all Cypriots and had no choice in equating the TCs into its sums. NO CHOICE!!! So stop this generous "RoC" crap....What did it di then.........Held us to ransom with it because it was only to be released on "RoC" terms and with "RoC" administration. The money should have gone direct to the TC community and should never have been allowed to be used as a ransom by the "RoC".

And that is the half truth that you left out...As to why the TRNC/KKTC did not accept the money from an entity that they do not recognise........Facts only seem to be important when they favour you eh!!!

Money comes from some place, and that is from the VAT that all EU ciitizens, Cypriots among them pay on every sale of goods and services.

As far as I know Turkish Cypriots have exempted themselves from VAT charges and payments. IT is natural then that the people who pay the money would want to administer where and how it is spent.

There was no question of generosity involved, just plain EU accounting.
