Cyprus issue not linked to Turkey EU bid

The Turkish President has called on European nations not to use the dispute over Cyprus as an excuse to slow down Turkey's EU membership.

Abdullah Gul was speaking in the parliament of the Turkish Cypriot during his first visit outside of Turkey since he took office last month.

It is a tradition for Turkish presidents to make their first trip abroad to the Mediterranean island's north.

"It is not right to link Cyprus problem with Turkey's EU membership. This is a wrong assessment. The Cyprus issue should not be used to slow down or prevent Turkey's EU membership process,'' Gul said.

"No one should expect us to accept political games that are being played and wait (for EU membership) forever,'' Gul concluded.

I think he was addressing the wrong 26 other EU members. He should have been talking with the only member that counts for Turkeys entry to the EU, and even that may be not enough, and that is the RoC. Also, the Cyprus Problem is directly linked to Turkey's entry to the EU. If Gül does not see this, then Turkey has much bigger problems than they may have had before.

He also said the only solution is a 2 state solution of 2 peoples. No mention of a Federal structure but only a velvet partition maybe he is preparing the ground already started by mastakis about the EU favoring 2 separate states as the GCs have not been viewed as flexible orproactive about finding a solution.

Why do you think that the RoC will comply with what Gül wants VP.?

I mean, who died and made Gül the Emperor.

Does Turkey own the Northern Part of Cyprus, therefore thy can push for a deal for a 2 state solution.

As you always point out, that there are "two states" now, so why is it that the RoC is not jumping up and down to sign her rights away to the "TRNC" already, if they were to accept this proposal by Gül.

Perhaps I'm too pessimistic.!!

It is a fallacy to even consider that the EU will ignore the Cyprus issue in its negotiations for Turkeys' accession. Turkey , like it or not will have to face reality. She is a foreign power occupying a part of Cyprus , is it not how the International community interprets events ? Europe is the ultimate price and Turkey has to work at it .
