Neshe Yashin - Need more Cypriots like this

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

It is not right that a GC would not be allowed to run. Is this the case? Have they tried? and been refused? Are you refering to GCs resident in the North? Maybe our friend Halil might be able to shed some light on the matter from his vast resources.

Deniz, I am asking if the Talat administration will allow a Greek speaking Cypriot such as me to run in trnc state elections.

Ok. I understand. I also am asking the same questions. They might ask your residential status. If you are resident in the North, you have no prob there (or a citizen of this, as you call it 'illegal' entity) Obviously you are not, so we are stuck. Pointless asking these hypotheticals, as you well know the answers. As the North is not recognised you are stuck in limbo, with no rights to run. If you (the South) were not in the EU, would any Turkish speaker be allowed to run? I very much doubt it. You also would join my doubts.

Neshe Yashin

Many people asked me, why as a poet, I have decided to become a candidate for the parliament, especially for a small party knowing that I do not have a chance to win. My answer to this question was that my candidacy was mainly a challenge for the rising nationalism and by inviting Greek Cypriots to vote for a Turkish Cypriot I was doing this. Although I was very disappointed with the result of the elections which made United Democrats (EDI) lose its single representation in the parliament, I still felt a sense of personal victory. I was proud of the 1,423 persons who voted for me and made me top the list and want to thank each of them. In general I have to say that I have received a lot of love and respect from the voters, even from voters of other parties who shared with me their regret for not voting for me because of their attachment to a certain party. The fact that I was not invited to any local TV except the evening “BIZ” programme on CyBC, which was cancelled later and the interview put on to another programme in the morning, was also saddening. I was providing them an opportunity of a practice of co-existence in case one day they were willing to share the same political spectrum with the Turkish Cypriots. The International media, the media in the north of Cyprus, in Turkey and in Greece were more interested in my candidacy. I was joking that I was doing the campaign in the wrong places. It was an important experience for me in general and my definition of “failure” and “victory” is quite different. I think both EDI and me, we were victorious by courage.

1423 votes!!! Well that's something considering a)EDY is an extremely small party. That b) with 4,000 votes one gets in the parliament.

I believe Tcs should try in bigger parties next time.

These hypotheticals can get annoying. Not your fault. The RoC is recognised by the world at large, as you (pl) keep on reminding us, rightly. Any attempt of a GC person putting forward his candidacy would entail, the recognition of the'illegal state', would it not.

How about Fanourio? how about the other guy making the fils , Tony angastiniotis?

Pyro,

It kind of reminded me of all the comments being passed around when we attacked Iraq in 1990 Gulf War to get them out of Kuwait as to why we were helping Sheikh Jabr al-Sabah, the Emir of Kuwait who had 76 wives (I had lost count actually, but it was around that number) with comments like "76 wives, which one could he possibly love".

Thank you for answering my question.

The reaity for me is that whether we were in the EU or not TC would have been allowed to run. Cyprus has grown up since 1974 and evidence show that the RoC is willing to offer TC's opportunities to participate in the RoC. Not so the case in the occupied areas. And yes for me personally I much rather not support the trnc as it exists today therefore, no need to worry that a GC such as me will be running for parliament in the North.
