Theodore,
Be very creful in accepting anything that professor Iraklidis (Heraklidis) writes as being sincere and written without ulterior motives. His take on history is very peculiar. For instance, he accuses the original EOKA fighters of carrying out ethnic cleansing in the years 1955-59. Whatever anyone thinks of the EOKA there was no ethnic cleansing in that period.
This insistence on guilt and accepting guilt is very strange. All Greek Cypriot politicians have accepted at one time or other that there were massacres of civilians. THere were massacres on both sides and both during the troubles in 1963-4 as well as during July 1974, most notably at Maratha, Tochni, Tziaos and also at Afania and Palekythro.
One telling insance was when Iraklidis during a TV talk tried to equate the 1963-4 incidents with the Turkish invasion and Makarios Droushiotis stepped in and reminded him of the vastly greater scale of the invasion and the thousands of casualties. Iraklidis seemed surprised that someone of Droushiots' convictions would react.
Cypriots do not need any people like Iraklidis telling them to do the right thing. We all know what happened because Cyprus is a small place and everyone knows everyone and things cannot be hidden. Yes, the Turkish Cypriots suffered during the sixties, yes, their rights must be restored, but the invasion was a disproportionate response. Turkey could have restored the balance on the island without killing so many people and expelling many more from from their land. Two wrongs are not going to make a right.
