3 or 4 for a tenner at Larnaca market?

Postby The Microphone » Sun Sep 16, 2007 11:26 am

Went to the Larnaca market today. Was looking to buy DVDs. Ask the guy running the stall, an older bloke about 50 with the beard and stripey shirt, how much? £4 each or 3 for a tenner!

How come if you are Cypriot and ask the same question, its £3 aech and 4 for a tenner?

We watched the bloke in action and he ripped off every Brit that bought from him whilst selling at the different price to the locals.

You have been warned.

Needless to say we didnt buy. Thx to my pal who speaks Greek, who is a cypriot and was as equally as pissed as we were!!

I know exactly who you are on about. Most of the films from him are of good quality, but I've taken some back to him where they have been of totally poor quality, and its a hassle with him to change them. Don't use him anymore.....in fact, I just get my own from the net. Downloaded 2 during the night.

The quality of his films isnt the point although I have it that his films are good. What annoyed me the most is that he thought he could do this and get away with it!

Well now I hope that loads of people read this and Brits dont buy from him. It will serve him right.

I'll buy from somewhere else instead and suggest you do the same!!!

Good for you son, stick to your principles. That is absolutely terrible but not unheard of over here. Was it just the Brits he was ripping off? There is unfortunately a lot of 'anti Anglo' in this country amongst the Cypriots!! Is there not a 'man' who goes around making sure everything is fair and square?

My Son bought quite a few when he was here ~~ but he spoke to him in Greek so I guess he got a good deal.

It's not just this guy doing it they are all at it ~ even the hotels charge two rates ~ one for locals and one for Brits  .

Cyprus isn't unique in this dual charging as it happens all over the world including the UK :(

Its not good whoever does it. I mean Britain is the ripoff capital of the world. We know that. I'm sure it goes on all over the place. Not just here. In markets you used to able to barter. Not anymore sadly, coz at least you had a crack of the whip.

But to openly operate like this guy does assuming us 'dumb' brits dont know a thing or have cypriot friends is just not good. I dont expect he was alone there though, but that is an asssumption not something we saw for sure.

This just makes you wary of buying anything at the market that isnt clearly priced and isnt good publicity for the market which is a shame.

If there is a 'man' who checks up, this guy should get told because word doesnt take long to spread here as we all know!

The DVDs used to be 4 for 10. They are in fact now 3 for 10 due to the police payoffs. They got raided 4 weeks ago. They are now all paying off the police to tip them off when the anti-pirate police plan on visiting.

It was definately 4 for a tenner if you were cypriot. (decera Thega lire, yes?) We watched him in action. 3 for a tenner if you were a brit. My cypriot friend was very annoyed. At other stalls I watched transactions take place and then asked the price. I got quoted the same prices so I know other guys were playing it fair.

Well it could be worse. At the market in Limassol there are heaps of Brits ripping of Brits and give better deals to Cypriot's (maybe they think the locals would know what the local price really was) While many Cypriot businesses charge the Brits more, the Brits are far better at ripping of the Brits, I recently looked a property for 30,000 pounds and while i was there a British salesman turned up with a English couple and i over heard the price offered to them at 90,000 pounds!! I didn't buy as you could buy better for 20,000 pounds
