In another survey Deep Purples 'Smoke On The Water' was voted best 'Rock' riff of all time, it started more guitarists on their road to glory/failure/notoriaty than any other.

Procul Harems 'Whiter Shade Of Pale' also came very high.

if you understand what i mean by the thread is this one of the greatest songs ever writen as i have stated, it shares the same theme and it speaks the same language and it dilivers the same message these two songs
in order to understand it you will have to look a little deeper in its meaning and message

There are many songs better than this drivel.

Try listening to Grapes of Wrath by The Mission!

1. Im young ish
2. I can read.
3. Its drivel. Whitney Houston sung it to death a million times and its (limited) early appeal became such an irritation that I wanted to smash every radio and sereo system that blasted it out continuously.
4. If you dont like The Mission, try Killing in the Name by Rage against the Machine.
5. You can like it if you want to and if you think its the greatest song ever then good for you! You asked for an opinion and I gave one. :-)

"I believe the children are our future..."

Gee...thanks...couldn't have figured that out on my own. The song is just too cliche. It looks like it states something meaningful, yet only states the obvious.

And musically, I just don't think the song is anything special. Sorry...don't care for it.

Much depends on how you define 'a good song', if you'r looking for a message see Bob Dylan's reportoire or Neil Young (Neddle & The Damage Done etc), for feel good factor early Lennon & McCartney.
"I believe the children are our future" is a good commercial song with two good hook lines in the chorus as was the Dolly Parton song that Whitney also had a very big hit with, once again strong hook line; but I don't think that either will become a classic.
As a performing musician for some 45 years I find that songs don't need to have a message or be meaningful to be labled good, there are so many songs, instrumentals, jazz, big band, classical pieces etc that I have performed down the years; far too many to single one out as the best.
