Project offered from the North

Postby Niki » Wed Sep 12, 2007 8:43 pm

I realise this will raise emotions but - I have been offered a project in North Nicosia through a contact in Limassol who is being very generous in his recommendations of us to other companies, mainly in the South.

The big problem in accepting this project is the ethics and the fact I really do not wish to make a political stance with this. The other problem would be the implications to refuse this contact.

I of course know the general perceptions with 'the problem' and do not underestimate this but if this project was accepted would other companies in the South boycott us and more importantly would Cypriots in the South have a problem with this? Would the Turkish Cypriots have a problem with the fact we may not accept this project? Can we win which ever way we turn?

I have already made my decision on this but I am keen to understand further the thoughts of other members.

Well, what is the project Niki.?

Don't tell us private information, but what will this project entail and will it hurt the interest of the GC's that you happen to be living amongst at the moment.

No - if it was I wouldn't even consider it. It is a retail design based project for a new business.

If it's not hurting the locals in anyway, and the location in the North , I'm assuming it to be a shop that needs some kind of interior decoration / design to go with what they want to sell, and it does not belong to a GC family who have been deprived of their store, then I do not see a problem why you cannot do it.

The only question I have is, how is it that you as a "foreigner" is allowed to perform work there, in the "TRNC" while living in the RoC, but a local GC's are not allowed to do the same job also. I can see this being a issue with your friends perhaps, and even within yourself as being unfair. Then it will be a matter of what your own conscious will tell you to do.

I can see your dilemma on this one Niki.

I'm interested to hear what the GC's think on this one.

Well, unless the logo/name/motto is provocative itself I don't see how this could possibly hurt the RoC.

I did wonder why the person who recommended us didn't also recommend other ROC design companies - maybe to test us?

A dilemma and over something so simple - on the surface!

If they have legal titles to their shop or the land is build on then it is ok. Just be sure they don't use this as a bait to make you do something different after. And be sure they pay in advance. If you have any problems you will not be able to sue them since they don't care about laws.

You mean you do not physically need to go to the "TRNC" to perform this work Niki and that it can be done from your home place, because if you need to be in the North to do this job, how can it be offered to anyone in the RoC, who is a GC, who to the best of my knowledge are not allowed to work in the "TRNC" without a special permit, like the one Fanos received.
