Is there any call for

Postby k'n'G » Wed Sep 05, 2007 9:48 am

Dear all

Is there any call for a Plumber/Pool maintanence/Gardner/Window cleaner/General D.I.Y. person as we are thinking of moving over and this is one of our options, can you always find somebody to do this type of work or do you have trouble finding one ?? We really need to find out if we will be able to build up a client base.

thanks for your help

I'm in Larnaca and this seems to be pretty much covered in our area. Reading the Cyprus Weekly there are lots of adverts from expats offering this kind of work in Cyprus.

We're not too far outside Larnaca, and I have to agree with Twinkle. That having been said - there's never a plumber around or available when you NEED one!

I must admit that this kind of work seems to be the most often considered by expats and although there are still lots of building going on most area's as twinkle mentioned seem to be well covered.

One thing to be wary of is I believe the national insurance contributions are quite high in this line of work ~ as you will be classed as self employed you will pay whether you work or not~ which isn't good if work is a bit thin on the ground .

Now if you spoke Greek fluently there seems to be work ~( mostly small plumbing /electrical jobs) in the smaller villages outside the towns ~ they have a hell of a problem getting anybody from the town to come to them as the jobs are often to small to justify the distance travelled .

I often dread going to the villages to see friends as I always get caught for the odd job ~ I don't charge much but they seem to be so pleased that they have the problem fixed that they often give me more and even taking that into account it comes to much less than a town based tradesman would charge them.

I would say that an enterprising fluent Greek speaker could earn a decent living living with a mobile man in a van type business covering the out of the way area's that the town tradesmen won't travel to.

But if you don't speak Greek you are stuck to servicing the expat community along with all the others doing the same .

best of luck ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bill

Dear All - Thanks for your help , we didn't think it would be easy, nothing worth doing ever is , hopefully if we do make the decision to take the risk and move over , we can gain a reputation of being really good and reliable and get recommendations - again thank you !
