TALAT IS HAVING CONTACTS IN IZMIR

Postby halil » Mon Sep 03, 2007 10:39 am

President Mehmet Ali Talat has expressed hope for the meeting he is scheduled to hold with Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos this coming Wednesday on the 5th of September.
"We can resolve the Cyprus problem if we can reach a common conviction," Talat said at a conference on "the Role of Cyprus in Turkish-Greek Relations" in Dikili, a town in the District of Izmir, Turkey.
The President reminded that the Turkish Cypriot Side had on many occassions extended its peaceful hand to Greek Cypriot Side, "as a result of this, we have received two positive replies. The first for July 8th, and the second for September 5th.

The 8-July process failed to yield results because of Papadopoulos’s efforts to stall the process," he added.

Stating that he was going to meet with the Greek Cypriot leader without putting forward any preconditions, Talat said "We will meet on September 5th.

There has been speculation that the meeting is part of an election tactic by Papadopoulos to lure voters. May be these speculations are true, but an opportunity is needed to initiate the peace process. Let the election proces in South Cyprus be an opportunity if needed. We will sit and talk. May be we can find a way," Talat remarked.

However, Talat indicated that it should not be forgotten that Turkish Cypriot people are determined to protect its rights while solving the problem,

He said that the Turkish Cypriot people desired peace and a peaceful solution to the Cyprus but they would never abondon the right to political equality and self determination.

The President said that his biggest expectation from the meeting sceduled to take place on the 5th of September is that it will the pave the way for the resumption of the Cyprus negotiations process aimed at finding a permanent and a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

‘The 5th of September talks is a perfect opportunity for this’, he added.

On The Otherhand :
The Presidential Spokesperson Hasan Ercakica has confirmed that the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has sent a letter to President Mehmet Ali Talat, stating that he is ready to meet with him in October.

Speaking to the TAK news agency on the issue, Mr Ercakica said the date of a possible meeting between the President and the UN Secretary-General will be determined after meeting with UN officials in Cyprus next week.Mr Ban’s letter comes in response to President Mehmet Ali Talat’s earlier letter sent to him on the Cyprus issue.

halil, thank you for the post, we can always count on you.

Well I hope Mr Talat walks the talk and hope he has a list of things to talk about with Papadopoulos, because if they are just going to meet, shake hands pose for the camera and enjoy a cup of cypriot coffee well we all have hopes for another 33 year stalemate. Likewise Mr P better get his list ready also.

Turgay Avci has said that progress at Wednesday’s meeting between Turkish Cypriot Leader Talat and the Greek Cypriot leader Papadopulos depends on whether the Greek Cypriot Administration is sincere about moving the negotiations process forward.
Speaking to the Turkish NTV channel, the Foreign Minister(Turgay Avci) said that recent statements issued by both leaders on the island indicated that both sides attach great importance to the upcoming meeting.

Reminding that the Presidential elections will be held in South Cyprus in February 2008, Mr. Avci said the Turkish Cypriot Side had reservations that Papadopoulos’ suggestion for a leaders meeting after such a long time was purely related to scoring points for his election campaign.

“If the Greek Cypriot Side adopts a serious and sincere attitude towards the meeting, this process can move forward. But, if the Greek Cypriot leader intends to exploit the meeting for domestic and election purposes, the process will once again enter into deadlock” warned Mr Avci.

Pointing out that the Turkish Cypriot Side has little hope for an immediate settlement on the island, the Foreign Minister expressed the belief that little will change after the Presidential elections in South Cyprus.

Although the above words by Mr Talat are encouraging.

I couldn't help but laugh. If he is so confident they can solve it, whats he and Papadopoulos been doing for the past few years. I think he needs to decide if he wants independence and recognition of his pseudo state or unification under one nation. Poor bugger what will happen to his lovely Presidential Ststus if theere is a unification? Is that a motivating factor not to unify? I wonder

How can the correct atmosphere and mutual understanding be realised, when, before a crucial meeting between Talat and Papadopoulos; Talat is making the following public comment:-

"The 8-July process failed to yield results because of Papadopoulos’s efforts to stall the process."

Is this really necessary? Is it fruitful? This pre-disposition is indicative of a man who is not interested in progress, but merely attempting to score 'political points'. (And before the TCs (and Bananiot) become too excited; I am also aware of what Papadopoulos is doing).
