Canadians in Cyprus

Postby MapleLeaf » Mon Sep 03, 2007 4:26 am

Hello to everyone..

Because we are relocating to Cyprus due to my husband's job, I have been reading up alot on Cyprus and its history. I've read through many posts in this forum as well.

As a Canadian, I cannot comment on the issues at hand; but it is prevalent that all sides are passionate about their views.

Some Cypriots seem to resent foreigners moving to the Island. How do most Cypriots feel about others immigrating to Cyprus, and in particular, Canadians? I'm wondering if my family and I would be welcomed or have anything to be concerned about in this matter.

Kind regards..

Thanks for the welcome...Limassol seems to best suit our family. We are coming from the West Coast in British Columbia, if that is what you mean. In Canada we are west and east, and sometimes up north; but I've never heard south Canada. Usually south to Canada means the US.

Good to hear the positive feedback, thanks for your reply Paliometoxo!

hi Mapleleaf

..and welcome to our not so humble Forum! Yes, it gets a bit excitable here on the Forum but in real life Cyprus, rather than this 'virtual' one, we all get on pretty well.

Just one tip: make it clear you are Canadian and not Amercian (everyone will assume you are from the USA because of your accent) as it is a well known fact, in Cyprus, that the US is responsible for all terrorism in the world :-)

Lana

PS If you are from Quebec, maybe you will have a sexy French accent and not an 'Amercian' one!

At the bottom of my road (Larnaca) there is a guy from Toronto and a family from Canada. Contact the Embassy here and see if they can't point you to social groups etc.

Welcome,

I don't think you will have any problems here, moved 7 years ago and being scottish soon found plenty of friends from all walks of life and nationalities.

I am employed by a Canadian company, Talisman Energy, spent some time in Alberta, Medicine Hat which is close to BC MAYBE.

You may miss the snow of course, but you should make friends easily, this is a good start.

welcome to the forum. regarding cyprus history that would only take all of thirty seconds to read, just look at the map of cyprus and read the dates it was invaded and ocuppied, for over three thousand years, ohhhhh i forgot to mention, there no cypriot people left on the island they are all greeks and turks.soo if you want to understand a bit more about cyprus people you are better of reading about the mainland greeks and turks. becouse the people of cyprus think they are greeks and turks,
i hope your stay in cyprus is a pleasent one and you and your family make lots of friends, friends are e asy to make they are friendly people in cyprus, but never ask them is it possible they are not greeks or turks this will get you into trouble lol

Thanks for the tips, though we are not French Canadians. That's a touchy Canadian topic...much like the north/south in Cyprus. :)

Yes, I know how rude Americans can be. They are our neighbors remember. :)

Paramed, my husband works in oil & gas, and I have heard of Talisman Energy. We've lived in Alberta as well and have friends in The Hat. Small world.

I hope Limassol has a nice mix of expats and locals. I wouldn't want to be secluded from either.

Thanks for all the feedback. It helps more than you all know.

Regards...

Thanks for your reply, free_cyprus. Just to clarify what you're saying because I think it's important. Are you saying that it is offensive to call the residents Cypriots? I don't mind being corrected and welcome the advice. The last thing I'd want to do is offend anyone because of ignorance.

MapleLeaf
btw i love Maple cyrup, regarding your question to me it is not rude to call them cypriots but you will soon learn they will tell you they are greeks and they will refer to others as turks, and you will see greek and turkish flags all over the island that is supposed to be independent, lol regarding being excluded you will not feel that way most speak english and they are friendly.the only ignorance you will find is their identity being either greeks or turks in cyprus.
