Allanm,
I recall from y days of living in the UK the TV footage of the Glorious 12th of August, opening of the grouse season.
In Cyprus the hunting season opens a little later than in the UK and closes a lot earlier. The difference is that hunting is not limited to rich landoweners, but like in other Mediterranean countries it a resource shared by all citizens who have a license. Similar goes for fishing which apparently does not hurt anyone's sensibilities.
What people hunt- partridge, woodpigeon, turtle dove, quail, woodcock, some species of wildfowl, some species of thrush, and hare. All are approved by the EU regulations, all are edible, and all are hunted in other countries for much longer (UK season on woodpigeon is year round!) and without bag limits which do exist in Cyprus.
Let us keep our way of country life, like the UK and other EU countries are allowed to keep theirs. I think that boiling a lobster live to make thermidor is cruel, but Belgians like it, and good for them too!
In case you have not realised, I am a hunter, always have been and always will be.
