HUNTING SEASON

Postby allanm » Sun Sep 02, 2007 6:15 am

At 6.08 l heard the first gun shot, so l assume the hunters are back.
Can somebody please tell me what they are shooting at?
l know they kill the little birds which is illegal, but l have travelled all over this island and never seen any wild lifejust a couple of SNAKES.
Are there set hours or can they shoot all day, l have usually walked my dog by now but the shots sound so close, l'll think l'll wait.

allanm, keep your head down mate and keep your dog close, when the 'HUNTERS' are about, anything that moves is fair game.

If you fly model aircraft, keep well clear of the firing lines, I know of one incident that brought down a 'Tornado' up around the Troodos area, (bloody good shot !)

Today is the start of the dove and wood pigeon season.

Depending where you are it could be daily or just sundays and wednesday. Shooting can be done dawn to dusk.

The season will continue until feb.

You may find the week days quiter as most of the hunters would have gone to work. Also usually upto about 10am, there is very little if any shooting goin on until early evening for a couple of hours.

Its just a cyprus thing.

Allanm,

I recall from y days of living in the UK the TV footage of the Glorious 12th of August, opening of the grouse season.

In Cyprus the hunting season opens a little later than in the UK and closes a lot earlier. The difference is that hunting is not limited to rich landoweners, but like in other Mediterranean countries it a resource shared by all citizens who have a license. Similar goes for fishing which apparently does not hurt anyone's sensibilities.

What people hunt- partridge, woodpigeon, turtle dove, quail, woodcock, some species of wildfowl, some species of thrush, and hare. All are approved by the EU regulations, all are edible, and all are hunted in other countries for much longer (UK season on woodpigeon is year round!) and without bag limits which do exist in Cyprus.

Let us keep our way of country life, like the UK and other EU countries are allowed to keep theirs. I think that boiling a lobster live to make thermidor is cruel, but Belgians like it, and good for them too!

In case you have not realised, I am a hunter, always have been and always will be.

Well said Nikitas, I do hope you are not the hunter that shot down the model 'Tornado' jet aircraft last year, if you are 'Good Shot Mate' !!

No I am not, I hunt in Greece and other countries, I have not hunted in Cyprus yet and so far have not brought down anything bigger than a woodpigeon.

How big was the Tornado anyway? You mentioned model aircraft.
