The real answer is that national standards for the mastery of geography are in place in the U.S., but sadly the public education system is not meeting its goals and objectives because it's preoccupied with achieving GWB's "No Child Left Behind" criteria in the areas of reading and math - long story. In a nutshell, the U.S. public education system has acquired a "teach to the test" mentality, which requires "watering" down curricula to meet the needs of the increasing populace of special ed. and ESOL students. Now, do you really expect a 17-year-old girl to know this???
