I was meaning about personal safety on public transport, I will be doing this alone, and the extended family have not crossed over into the occupied area, (they have their reasons). I am a bit put off, and that is directly in relation to a few TC's on this forum with their bigotted views of GC's. I guess I'll know on the day whether I would be game enough to do it or not. I just want to walk the street that I played and walked as a four year old, and see my grandmothers home and visit the orchard if still there. Thank you so much for your information ;)

I know the feeling Humanist. Long ago I had been trying to find the courage to go south and visit my old stomping grounds. I was planning to hide my true identity in case some harm would come to me. 2 years ago when I finally met, I was greeted with warmth by my now elderly neighbors who remembered that skinny turk thay used to call gamillo. I was quite tall then.

Unfortunately in your case you will come accross the settlers. Normal TCs are OK as long as there is a smile there. I used to be put off by the appearance of some GCs in the north, as they appeared quite miserable (understandaable) and not spending any money(they would bring their own food etc). That is understandale as well because they were dscouraged, by whoever? Things are changing slightly.
I am sure you will be safe.
Enjoy

if she wants to response she can ...... it really isn't that important to me. She obviously has reasons for it. However pointing it out to all users, will be better informed.

Thank you Admin

I would not have any worries about going to Gemikonağı. The northen part of Cyprus is much safer than, say, inner London. If you are worried, just pass yourself off as an Australian tourist, and there is a ready explanation for visiting this place. Say you are an environmetalist and you want to see first-hand the environmental damage wrought there by the Cyprus Mining Corporation. I believe that people who have been settled from Turkey into GC houses nowadays feel nervous about losing these homes, so people visiting their old homes may get a rough reception if settlers live there. It would be worth knowing if the population of Gemikonağı (which apparently stands at 420) is largely TC or mainland Turkish. If they are largely settlers, I would just pretend to be a tourist, but I am sure that if most of the population are TCs you will get a warm welcome if you tell them you were born there.

Thank you Tim,

So, if anyone knows if the population of Gemikonagi/ Xeros is mainly TC or settlers it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Thank you Deniz. I have to admit I am surprised at myself and the fear that this possibility has raised. As you said your lucky the neighbours were there, at least. There will be no neighbours there, everyone left. I guess I'll know when the right moment comes and perhaps accept that it may not. At least not on this trip.

The sad thing I believe is that really there is no problem. Only a very seriously damaging political game.
