Stadium needed

Postby webbo » Fri Aug 31, 2007 5:47 am

Does anyone know of a football stadium in the Limassol area with facilities to accommodate 2000 - 3000 fans or more.

Cyprus Rugby Union have 3 International games coming up at the end of October/ beginning of November all to be played in Cyprus.

The intention was to hold the first International between Cyprus and Azerbaijan here in Limassol.

Unfortunately the stadiums that we have contacted that are capable of holding a couple of thousand people, have all declined. They are privately owned stadia and the Cyprus Government cannot tell them what to do i.e. cancel the football fixture because an International takes preference.

The stadia contacted so far are: Tsirion Stadium & Parakleisha Stadium. We are waiting for a response from the stadium on Makarios Avenue and this will be apparently made by the end of August!!!

Does anyone know of any other stadium's in the Limassol area that could hold a couple of thousand people that we could contact.

We need to promote rugby in Limassol and this would appear to be the best way, but unfortunately our hands are tied because of the private ownership of the stadiums and the fact that football is god!!!

If we are not able to find a suitable stadium within the next 2-3 weeks at latest, then Limassol will miss out as the International will have to played, but probably in Paphos.

Your soonest suggestions will be well received.

You need this for free? If you can pay something then maybe you can contact second or third division teams of the Limassol area like AEZ for example.

100% official. Recognised and supported by the Cyprus Government and part of FIRA. These games are the first steps to getting worldwide recognition.

If you know of any contacts within these clubs it would be much appreciated. I will have to contact the President of Cyprus Rugby Federation re renumeration. First thing we need is a ground to approach.

They are 100%, My company carried out the Event Medical Cover in Paphos for the first ever International match between Cyprus v Greece.

Cyprus have been promoted to level 4 of the IRB and hopefully can progress through the system like Italy have done.

webbo sorry I don't know contact details of teams. :( Shouldn't you be a citizen of a country to play in a national team? I thought the rugby team had lots of ex-pats in it.

I and a few others qualify to play as we have been resident in Cyprus for over three years but the bulk of the team have Cyprus roots or parentage. At present there are 15 players in the UK who all want to take part and all have Cypriot heritage. Interest is growing from all rugby playing nations where Cypriots have become involved in the game. I am proud to say I have been involved from the outset but as I am getting on in years (43 next month) I will happily step aside for the younger and if you want more eligilbe players. The first game against Greece only had 4 players out of twenty two who were not of Cypriot roots. I sure progressively this will become a true Cyprus team.
