UK Prison Officers Strike

Postby skyvet » Wed Aug 29, 2007 6:59 pm

Am I missing something here? The Prison Officers throughout the UK staged a 24 hour lightning strike today, starting at 0700.
It is widely understood that their profession is one in which strike action is not allowed for reasons of security, and the government has publicly reiterated that their action is illegal. Why, therefore are the pickets (most of whom are serving officers) still manning their lines? Why have they not been arrested for being in defiance of a high court ruling issued today that their action is illegal? Surely their action can't be seen as being "a little illegal?" It's like being "a little pregnant". It either IS, or it ISN'T.
Double standards or what?

We only threaten to take action because if we did arrest them it would probably be an infringement to their human rights, and you know careful we are on that issue, burglers get compensated for hurting themselves breaking into your property, prisoners get compensation for slipping on soap in the showers etc.

the strike was against the law as there was a court order against them from holding industrial action..but because they are under staffed not under paid i must add there on a good wack.so the main reason was short of staff... got that from the horses mouth this morning as i was due to service some lifts in a prison today & had to be turned away due to a full lock down & no one to escort me round the prison.

They've been offered 2.5% scaled in three phases over 12 months.
The top bosses in the UK received on average 37%.
