Class Cyprus - 3rd world, developing, developed?

Postby Spetz » Wed Aug 29, 2007 5:38 pm

If you came off the plane at Larna airport, without knowing what Cyprus is, and you spent some time here and there in the main cities, what would you think of Cyprus?

I persnonally class it as developing, even though in some areas I might go as low as 3rd world.

And finally, Cyprus is classed in reality as a developed or semi-developed country isn't it?

My friend you are exactly inside. You understand very well what is actually happen in the Island, the problem is some of its citizens considering the state as a modern European country. They can not understand of what you are speaking about. They will always consider that they are the centre of the world.

Just came back from France... i am glad to be back. The quality of life there is not comparable with the quality of life in Cyprus...so if you don't like Cyprus, u can always pack your bags and go. I still think joining EU was a mistake... just to manipulate Turkey i guess...which is not happening much anyway. The quality of life cannot be measured in how the Airport Terminal looks like...

Cyprus is small so you will not see big metro cities, sky scrapers and big industries but that doesn't mean it is not developed!! Many areas of the USA and other developed countries are more 3rd world than any area we have in Cyprus. ;)

I don't know what it's classed as but what I do know is that many Cypriot houses have Italian marble and granite on their floors and stairs and kitchen benchtops, CROHE taps and bathroom gear, Versace bathroom tiles, Muskita doors & windows, and the list goes on. If you want to call that 3rd world go ahead...

Apart from the non-existent public transportation system, I would classify Cyprus as a developed country. Why would you classify it any lower?

Raymanuva,

You traveled whre in France? I ask because down south it is a dream of how Cyprus could be if we had some good taste! Mediterranean climate, landscape, vegetation but well cared for. I guess patriotism shows in how you care for your land, and this side of the Med (and not just in Cyprus ) we do not care that much.

Aside from that Cyprus is definitely 1st world, in terms of standard of living with some gaps left to cover in terms of public health, transpor etc. Overall it is much better than many parts of UK, USA, and other developed countries.

Cyprus, by definition, cannot be classed as a third world country.

A third world country is one in which the wealth difference between the very few rich, and the more numerous masses of deprived people, is vast. Such lack of distribution of wealth is not seen in Cyprus where the majority own their own homes/land (which are amongst the most expensive in Europe).

Perhaps what you felt was a sense of backwardness usually associated with hot climates, and a relaxed way of life. :P
But, in Cyprus, a highly developed culture and maniana are not mutually exclusive. :)

The ONLY way in which Cyprus could be associated with being third world, is by the fact that it has been invaded by a hungry neighbour. :(

Nikitas, i went to a heart of Paris... i got nice photos to show where people shit in the middle of the street... pissing all over the place, homeless and drunk people, dirty streets etc... i liked Paris as its a beautiful city in overall and has a rich history, but the life there seemed miserable. Then i went to London, which seemed a bit better but again, the quality of life is way lower than in Cyprus. Sometimes i felt depressed...
