It has that option but that will be a door closed to the west which is not what the US and the UK want. If they are honest then that is not what the rest of Europe wants but we are asking for honesty here. The only thing that the Germans and France don't want is Turkey on UK's side.

Please remember that in the Kurdish regions the vote for AKP was even higher than the national average of 47%...

Not so long ago,Gul gave an interview to a British reporter in which he claimed that secularism has had its day in Turkey and it must be put to bed...Given Erdogan's statement (again some years ago) that "Democracy is a train you get on to take you where you want to go",it might be too premature to hail the election of these two to the highests posts in Turkey.

My personal belief is that both Gul and Erdogan are too cunning to provoke the military too much...They will make deals with the generals and deliver as much of their Islamic agenda as possible to thier voters, stopping just short of dismantling secularism which will inevitably trigger a military coup...The biggest bargaining chip the AKP has to keep the military happy is Cyprus...The election of Gul hence ensures that no concessions will be forthcoming on Cyprus...And given my strong suspicion that Gul or Erdogan do not really want Turkey to join the EU,we can look forward to another 30 years of stalemate on our homeland...All Cypriots have been the losers by the election of Gul...except of course those who are praying for partition... :( :(

I'm going to disagree with my good friend Bir on this one. I think Gul and Erdogan do want Turkey in the EU, which will allow them to exercise their Islamic beliefs without the fear of being toppled by the Military, by having the EU protection. The secular also want the EU, so the only ones that does not want the EU are the Nationalist and the Military Heads who are the very small MINORITY. This gives me comfort over Cyprus's future, since Turkey will need Cyprus to become a EU member.

I do hope you are right and I am wrong,Kikapu...
Joining the EU would mean putting to bed the dream of desecularising Turkey. This will not go down well with the majority of AKP voters...On the other hand staying on the road to EU would keep the military at bay plus achieve most of their islamic agenda (headcover for women legalised, graduates from Imam hatip colleges (religious high schools) having the right to join all universities plus the army, and banning of alcohol from public places etc,in democratisation guise..That is my worry...That they will stay on the EU course as long as possible but use Cyprus as an obstacle for not joining, while they are placing their men in key institutions like the judiciary (constitutional court, supreme court, appeals court),University Control Board (YOK),and state governerships and national media organisations, and the ultimate goal,in the military...In any case we won't wait for long to see their true agenda. If Gul starts rubberstamping all the decisions of the Erdogan government, notwithstanding secular and military opposition, the game will be exposed... :( :(

Just to see if you'd look as sweet and innocent as Yashar pasha...

Please dont Karma. Esharps are ugly. A see - through ferace (tul) will do nicely just showing your eyes. 19th Century Uskudar style. Nothing is more seductive. Sorry BK.

That's what I asked bigOz from the very begining but so far he did not answer.

So it's quite possible there has been a deal already over the Cyprus issue.
On the other hand if someone from the Army elite would become President, no deal was necessary. "No concessions" to Cyprus would go without saying.
So I guess with Gul+Erdogan we still have a chance, no?

NO :(

Well...I will not be as definite as karmacim.
If I am wrong, and joining the EU proves irresistible in the long run for the AKP government,we could talk about some hope. But not for a long long time,I am afraid,Pyro gardash... :(

Not at all. I am giving you the right to remain silent, oops sorry got that wrong, that was a different show. I give you the right to exercise your foul mouth as you please. Sooner or later you will choke on the foulness you produce. I have a feeling of deja vu here. I wonder?
