The only friend Turkey needs to win over to become a EU member, is going to be little old Cyprus. All the rest are not even worth talking about.

Birkibrisli wrote:Gul's democratic election is a great opportunity for Turkey. If he becomes the President for all Turkish citizens,as he has pledged, and if he defends the secular, democratic state ,as he has pledged,Turkey could pull herself together and might even manage to deal with the Kurdish problem.
Please remember that in the Kurdish regions the vote for AKP was even higher than the national average of 47%...

Not so long ago,Gul gave an interview to a British reporter in which he claimed that secularism has had its day in Turkey and it must be put to bed...Given Erdogan's statement (again some years ago) that "Democracy is a train you get on to take you where you want to go",it might be too premature to hail the election of these two to the highests posts in Turkey.

My personal belief is that both Gul and Erdogan are too cunning to provoke the military too much...They will make deals with the generals and deliver as much of their Islamic agenda as possible to thier voters, stopping just short of dismantling secularism which will inevitably trigger a military coup...The biggest bargaining chip the AKP has to keep the military happy is Cyprus...The election of Gul hence ensures that no concessions will be forthcoming on Cyprus...And given my strong suspicion that Gul or Erdogan do not really want Turkey to join the EU,we can look forward to another 30 years of stalemate on our homeland...All Cypriots have been the losers by the election of Gul...except of course those who are praying for partition... :( :(

I'm going to disagree with my good friend Bir on this one. I think Gul and Erdogan do want Turkey in the EU, which will allow them to exercise their Islamic beliefs without the fear of being toppled by the Military, by having the EU protection. The secular also want the EU, so the only ones that does not want the EU are the Nationalist and the Military Heads who are the very small MINORITY. This gives me comfort over Cyprus's future, since Turkey will need Cyprus to become a EU member.

Zan you friggin hypocrite, Just what do yout think the 90,000 TC's are doing in the OCCUPIED AREAS of Cyprus? Are they not holding the other 800,000 Cypriots ransome?

Where do you get off mate, not all of them TRUE Cypriots, we are not handing our country to Turkey or Greece for that matter ion a silver platter like you have done. And We did not hand it over in 74 through Eoka B. A coup is just that some fanatics wanted to do so but they were overthrown because the majority of Cyriots did not.

You sit there advocating more for Turkey than youy do about Cyprus and a fair and just solution for Cypiots and escpecially for Turkish Cypriots to unite with the rest of the Island to access EU and you talk about not true Cypriots. You are a morron in disguise mate.

You hypocrite, in your previous posts you have made coments such as Turkey does not need or want EU membership and now you get excited.

Which stance will you take Zan and which will you support? Or will you go for the one that gives you personal gains. Use the GC's where ever you can and sit by big fat mama Turkey when it suits. Your a traitor of your own country and you can't even admit it to yourself.
