Health Services

Postby anastasiaC » Tue Aug 28, 2007 4:47 pm

Hi guys
just enquring for my grandmother
she is in early stages of
Ahlzemers which is very sad for us as we are so far away
but do you know if there are any health services that the Cyprus govt /community services offer for retired people or pensioners?
what about getting someone in to care in terms of housekeeping etc
any other services?

or is the only option to go to private doctors and maybe get a sriLankan lady to move in and assist??

Government offers free health care but you have to go to hospital for that. I don't think the government offers free housekeeping services to anybody. She will either have to pay for such services, have her relatives take care of her or move to some institution for old people. :( Maybe there are some non-profit organizations that can help a bit. I know there are such associations for cancers patients but I am not sure about Alzheimers. I guess there should be something.

I have a friend whose wife was a home help through the local municipality. All she was told to do was visit the old people on her route once or twice a week, make sure they were OK, take some food and have a chat. She didn't last long as the council expected her to use her own car and petrol and wasn't reimbursed for it.

An overseas maid is between 150-180 per month before social insurance. As you grandmother is ill she will be entitled to get one. Contact the welfare service in their area and ask them

Nicosia 22 375477
LImassol 25 804459
Larnaca 24 800101
Paphos 26 821601

Good luck :)
