Hi all

We've adopted a dog in Cyprus and are waiting for him to come over to the UK.

We live in the UK and we go to Cyprus each year for a holiday. It was only this year that we experienced first hand the attitude of the Cypriots towards animals. It was really distressing and we felt like our blinkered "tourist" eyes had really been opened. It's not fair to lump everyone in the same boat, but generally speaking, it is a cultural thing. and people need re-educating.

We were so moved by what we saw that we felt we had to act. So, we adopted the newest member of our family back in July, whilst we were on holiday. We've got to wait until the end of February next year until he can come over - but it's going to be worth it.

I now know that there are a number of animal shelters in Cyprus who are in desparate need of help. So it was frustrating to hear that there is no support from the Cypriot Government.

Also, there is little or no PR done to promote:

1. how to properly care for animals,
2, their rescue cases, and
3. the whole adoption process.

More needs to be done to get these animals to the place they need to be - loving homes.

The Paphiakos and CCP Animal Welfare Centre in Paphos are always looking for good homes for their rescued animals. Check out their website at http://www.cyprusanimalwelfare.org

The situation of these poor souls is so desparate. So whether you live in Cyprus or travel there for a holiday, please, please think about adopting a dog and taking them home with you.

Thanks

The attitude towards cats and dogs is the same in all parts of Cyprus - but Animals have been treated that way for a long, long time. Adding to the problem is the intentional breeding of "status" dogs like Rottweilers etc. I know of one such litter that were bred from an undersized bitch, and as a result the pups are no-where near the "right size" and the idiots are practically giving them away!! Here the animal rescue centre round up the unwanted street dogs, neuter them and put them back on the streets as there is no room at the "inn" so to speak. The dogs then form packs and a lot end up poisoned because of the nuisance of ripping up rubbish etc etc. It will take a long time to re-educate a mind set that does not see neglect as cruelty, and I truly believe that these people who mis-treat (in our eyes) animals, really don't think they are being cruel at all and this - in my opinion is the root of the problem.

Please be aware that the CCP in Paphos do get a lot of support and donations from around the world where as the Limassol shelter does not get any regular funding whatsoever and are so so desperate to find money just to feed the dogs, this is without the funds needed for health care and the general up keep of the dogs. There are 100 dogs at the Limassol shelter and a dog is never euthanised unless sick and suffering. Their future is in the hands of us animal lovers to donate and give whatever they can to help them.

We have just returned from Cyprus and as I mentioned in another thread my wife and I met June at the shelter. We hope to buy an apartment near Larnaca and have offered to help when we are there. The dogs are well cared for considering the circumstances but June does need more help. I urge everyone to send donations to help with the running costs. My wife was in tears when we left, the dogs just want someone to love them, they were so affectionate. June told us that they manged to place six of them in good homes last week but a few days later some more arrived at the shelter. She has five puppies only a few weeks old, please get in touch with her do whatever you can to help.

It was so lovely to meet Jerry and his wife (so sorry forgotton her name). They gave us a lovely donation to help vaccinate the puppies when they are old enough. Thank you.

Unfortunately one of our dogs (alsation with 3 legs, Cuff Cuff) got bitten by a snake that had entered his cage, he was treated but after 48 hours died yesterday. He will be truely missed by all of us :(

All the dogs at the shelter have been given names as we love them all and just want the best for them especially a loving and secure home.

Hi June

Sorry about Cuff Cuff. I am sure he is in a better place.

Met your hubby this lunchtime and off loaded some things that I hope will be of use.

Come on guys. June or Michael can arrange to meet you in Larnaca or Limassol for any donations that are collected. Food, towels and toys are great...But CASH, cash is a God send :)

I have managed to get my friend to help out on the 14th too, we are going to try and get people at work to donate things for the tombola. I was wondering if it would be worth me bringing my nails stuff with me and seeing if anyone wanted a quick manicure to help make some money. I am doing a nail art class at the moment so thought that if I could learn how to do paw prints this might go down well, what do you think Pauline? I showed my partner pictures of the puppy and he thought he was beautiful.

Junemichael could you forward some directions for me so that I can come over and see you with some photos of the dog show Pauline is organising, when I come over in October. We are staying over at Pernera, but are hiring a car so will be able to come and see you and the "wuffers".
