I haven't read the whole thread so sorry if it has been mentioned before but in the UK it is being said that the fires were started by land developers. Apparently it is illegal to build on forested land so this is the easiest way around it. Only 65 dead so far

Forests were mismanaged, period. This developer story we have been hearing for ever, it is not valid. Look at the terrain in the burnt areas, some of it has 45 degree inclines and is miles from anywhere, no one can physically build there.

All of us in this Forum live around the Mediterranean or have relatives who do. We should all know some facts about our forests. Med forests are destined to burn when mature, this is a biological fact. If we do not want them to burn we manage them. we move in and do what a fire would do but not so destructively.

In Greece the ecological groups made forest management impossible, yelling foul every time a chainsaw went near a tree. Watch out for these guys, they will soon be at work in Cyprus and elsewhere where the EU gives money to NGOs involved in "environmental work", they are not as innocent or as knowledgeable as they want you to believe.

I must admit that some of the terrain was steep but I don't think that that is where the fires were started or where they were meant for. It is obvious that these fires got out of hand very quickly and the arsonists did not quite understand what they wee doing. I wonder how many heads will roll on this...if any?

The arrests were mostly of people negligently starting fires.

We all want to blame someone for something this big and this destructive. But the truth is more mundane. If there is wilful arson it would make more sense to look to crazies more than developers.

The same scene, fires in dry, dense brush that enveloped adjoining forests unfolded in Croatia, Spain, yesterday. For the same reasons- forest areas not managed in time. Note also that managed forests, in Greece and elsewhere rarely burn and if they do the fire is caught and stopped fairly soon. But forestry work is boring, costs money and therefore is easy to delay till it is too late. Cyprus and Cypriots take note!

Zan, I wonder if, not how many, heads will roll, considering Greece charges arsonists but seems never to convict them.
