Oranos

One senior communications analyst for a former minister once complained to me about the

Quote: "gayification of modern society" the greek word he made up was "ekpustefsi". We have gone through a generation where any kind of preparedness was the instant object of ridicule, any talk of taking care of the countryside, what the English call stewardship, seen with suspicion. So the bush was allowed to build up, and become like a fuel depot ready to burn.

The last few days were a deadly combo- very high temperatures, low humidity, and then gale force winds. In Athens we had force 8 blowing for two days solid. With or without arsonists the reciped was disaster and it happened. Now the problem is how to prevent erosion and deadly floods in the fall.

Your suggestion of trained teams would have staved off the problem of too much dry wood accumulating in the countryside and it would have made response to fires fast and effective. But, it was not done. Hope this time thelesson is learned.

same shit here mate ...both in the mentality (hence i do voluntary work for the government in emergency planning - water and emergency responce studies )
and the weather .... also we have an additional issues ...that is trees that use to slow the winds down from Troodos etc have been cut down ..land sliced etc ....so now some areas have gale force winds coming down from mountains in the summer and then huge weather gusts which create Tornados etc ...something that will be become more common...

seems as though it is us not just the americans who need to monitor and plan for weather changes

i am going to a local forestry and land planning meeting with a friend of mine ...so we can put /voice our concerns ( i live near forests and hills )

indeed The Greece issues shiould awaken us all at how quick these things happen ...and some plans put into place ....training programs ....i see people have criticise the Greek government for their slow reactions ...is this a reflection of the issue or shock ...

i am though glad you are ok .....i will be visiting friends in Greece later this and next year ,...i hope i dont see as much devastation as i think there is ...

...Greek helenic flag is at half mast tomorrow and this week at my school

Too early! However, I don't foresee much in the way of significant change. We might get some cumulus formation in the early afternoons over the next 3 days. This could possibly develop into cumulonimbus with isolated thunderstorms of no major consequence.

Do you regret moving in Cyprus?
Nope. Doubt I will either. Try working in Slough for 6 years or so to depress the hell out of you. When we got took over by that company the first email they sent to us was to be careful when walking to our cars as people have been stabbed and robbed in the past. In the car park which has cameras and 24/7 guards... Nice. And this is in a huge industrial estate (biggest in Europe I read, and we worked around the corner from where the filmed the outside of the building for the program the Office).

As for weather gadgets, yeah you can find loads of free stuff all over the place. Was just mentioning that Vista has a gadget ready to go from install. Drag it to the desktop and it gives you a forecast for the next few days. There are also loads of others if you use the get more gadgets option. One site I used to use was http://www.wincustomize.com/index.aspx which has loads of stuff for StarDock software (Windowsblinds, DesktopX, ObjectDock etc) but some of it is standalone. Some of the DesktopX stuff doesn't need DesktopX to run for example.

Cheers

North Windsor? Pretty much. Personally I lived a stones throw away from Ascot. Not a bad place to live, but Slough really brought me down. Really really sucks.
