Ottoman Census of Cyprus

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Ottoman Census of Cyprus

Postby T_C » Fri Aug 24, 2007 3:30 pm

I found the Ottoman Census.

It reveals that in 1571 there was a total of 197.586 people living in Cyprus. Because of plagues, droughts etc. and something to do with crickets (:?: :?)the population dropped to 80.000.

According to Bishop Kyprianos in 1777 the population consisted of 47.000 Turks and 37.000 Greeks.

The British Census of 1881 states there were 186.173 people living in Cyprus. The population grew quickly, just before WWI (1911) 274.108 people, before WWII (1931) 347.959, after (1946) 450.114 and in 1952 500.000 people!

Where did they all come from?

And some of you call TCs "visitors"

You have more settlers than we do!!!!!!!!!!!

Point one: Your source is the Turkish government.
Point two: Out of those 197.586 not a single one was Turkish Cypriot
Point three: The reason the population dropped has a lot more to do with the massive killings of Cypriots by the Turks. In Nicosia alone they killed 20.000 within a few days.

The British Census of 1881 states there were 186.173 people living in Cyprus. The population grew quickly, just before WWI (1911) 274.108 people, before WWII (1931) 347.959, after (1946) 450.114 and in 1952 500.000 people! Shocked

Where did they all come from?

Tip 1: If you don't have the Turks butchering people by the 1000s every now and then and causing misery and starvations, then the population can grow normally.
Tip 2: A lot of Greek Cypriots were forced to become Muslims in order to pay less taxes and be treated better by the Ottomans. When the Ottoman rule was over many of them reverted back to Christianity.

maybe the turks and greeks intermarried... they do say that we are incredibly similar genetically. maybe one partner was willing to give up his/her greekness/turkishness.

There were very few such cases. The main reason for the similar DNA is the fact that most TCs are actually GCs that changed religion during the Ottoman rule in order to be treated better. Many of them reverted back to Christianity after the English took over, but not all. Actually even until the 1950s-60s there were many TCs who had Greek as their first language.

Deniz you asked the question you got your answer. Do you deny that the ottomans treated the greeks like animals. I'm sorry but if your going to ask stupid question you need to be able to accept the responses.
