The issue of being a Cypriot
Dear Sirs,
When you say Cypriot, You mean Greek speaking Cypriots. I am a Turkish speaking Cypriot. As Cypriot as Greek speaking. We are all Cypriots. I have Greek speaking Cypriot friends and we have no problems. Time to time when articles appears anti Greek, or like your article anti Turk, I know one thing that division widens.
All Cypriots are my countrymen. We speak Turkish or Greek but we have lots of things in common. One of the important and not realized by most people is that we all speak in Roman accent. That's called Cypriot accent.
Cyprus is not Greek or Turk. Get this into your brain. Long time ago I was in Ireland and I was looking for a visa to work there. When they asked me who I am, I said Turkish Cypriot. I hat to show my Cyprus Passport. The Person at the time looked at me and said You don't even know who you are. You are a Cypriot regardless what you speak. I speak English. That doesn't make me English. I am Irish he said.I thought with embarrassment and I realized he knew me more than I knew myself.
The reality is that to call spade a spade, both side of Cyprus, you will find people are in the wrong mentality. Just to give you example. I want the division to be lifted. when I read your article, I want the division to remain. I am sure many people will think the same as me.
If you don't want to see partition in Cyprus, You should be protecting all Cypriots.
I want all the people who claims to be Greek or Turk to live the Island. Whoever realize that we are all Cypriots, regardless what language they speak, they are the only ones can lift the division for good on the island. Unfortunately they are out numbered at present time.
Seventy percent Australians are English descendent but they say they are Australian. Specially the ones came to Australia two hundred years ago and they are now 4th or 5th generation.
Cypriots generations goes back much longer than new country like Australia. We have to learn a lot from them.
