Sat TV Recording

What are the options for Hard Disk recording of UK FTA and FTV channels?

I have a Freesat for Sky card which I will bring with me to Cyprus.

This is my understanding:

If I buy a generic hard disk recorder I will be able to record FTA channels only.

If I bring a Sky + box, it will not work.

But if I have a generic hard disk recorder with card slot, will I will be able to record FTA and FTV provided I keep putting the Freesat-from-Sky card back into a normal Sky box every ten days or so to keep it active?

My great hope is that Channels 4 and 5 go FTA next year.

Have I got this right?

Do I have any other options?

Dear Brian

1/ SKY HD and SKY plus DOES work out here... the problems are
a) getting it turned on -to record - matched to the box
b) keeping it turned on if the box is new or within the first year of a SKY contract.

Providing you have two feeds from the lnb and a SKY subsciption .. any SKY sub.. SKY now give the pause record facility FREE on all packages

2/ What type of SKY + is it?

The HD box is fantastic tuner, but most SKY + are poor on weak signals such as BBC1/2/ ITV :-(, so if do NOT want to take out a SKY sub ,then this is NOT the tuner to bring to CY

3/ If you wish to use a std HDD /DVD recorder in conjunction with a SKY box and a FTV card, you could get

BBC 1/2/3/4/CBBC/Ceebeebies/News 24 / BBC parliament and BBC radio stns
ITV and ITV 2+1
C4
Five, Five life/ US
Trouble
SKY three
SKY News
CNN

without the FTV card..

BBC 1/2/3/4/CBBC/Ceebeebies/News 24 / BBC parliament and BBC radio stns
ITV and ITV 2+1
Trouble
SKY News
CNN

3/ a generic HDD/ DVD recorder will not read a SKY card. Free channels only

4/ It is rumoured that C4 might go FTV ..

This assumes you have dish big enough in Cyprus and correctly tuned..
