Insects

Postby Helen & David » Fri Aug 24, 2007 12:11 am

Hi everybody...... 5 weeks til we arrive in Paphos!! Yippee!

I have done a search and can't quite find the info I need. I'm interested to know about insects in Cyprus eg: What type/time of year/sting or no sting (just general info).

We have been to Paphos in October and November and don't recall anything apart from a few ants on our balcony. We were there again in August for a month last year and only saw a few ants and a couple of resident spiders on the outside stairs.

The only other insects we saw were a couple of persistent ones when we sat down for lunch at Viklari one Sunday, although they flew off as the restaurant got busy. The only way I can describe them is that were slightly larger but looked like brown fluffy bees - ideas anyone?

One final question: Are there wasps in Cyprus. I've not seen one but as I have a totally irrational phobia a lack of them would be a major plus point to me.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, we can't wait to leave the UK but there's so much to organise my heads spinning most days at the moment!
Regards, Helen

So does this mean in the cooler weather there are hornets? There sting can be quite painful and dangerous if not treated. We have pretty large ones here in the UK as I live in the country surrounded by farmland. I just want to know what to be prepared for. Thank you.

Unfortunately I don't live in Cyprus :(

BUT every summer that I go I see hornets. Well I think they're hornets anyways...theres 2 types that I see....

Ones black, furry and BIG (but definately NOT a wasp. Wasps are usually fat where as this one looks "toned" and has 2 parts to it's body)

The others red, furry and BIG (with the same body described above)!

They both look like they can inflict some serious pain and I see the red ones all the bloody time when I go swimming in some of the pools out there.

helen me dear dont worry ,....you wont see anything like that now .... but if you are really worriedm as i said vinegar on a sting ....

i live in arathippou ...being english cyp ..my mum has a lovely garden ...the only insects i have seen lately are butterflies and at night flies ..

in your holiday apartment ....get yourself a little first aid box (halfords sell them i think )

in this heat .... unless you are going hiking in hills you have no fear ...

my cats play in the garden and attack anything that flys .......

It's not going to be a holiday for us this time, we're moving to Paphos permanently so I'm trying to get an all round picture. We guessed last August it was just too hot for them but in the cooler weather? I always have a first aid kit in the house and car and top of the list is Waspeze! I'll remember about the vinegar though, cheers, Helen
