They're still here...especially around grape vines. Bang them with a baking tray that knocks them for 6!

Forgot to mention the other that I've seen:

Mosquitoes (obviously)
Mantis (nasty. Which change colour around their surrounds. One got in the house, darted under the sofa, we picked up the sofa and it has turned cream like the underneath)
Cockroaches (didn't know they could fly....ewww!!!)
Wasps, bees and hornets.
Crickets, locusts, small ziziros (don't know their English name)
Spiders (some are like off a sci-fi movie set)
Centipedes and millipedes (huge ones that are yellow that pack a nasty bite!).

You are unlikely to be bitten by anything other than mosquitoes.BUt Cyprus is a haven for the weird and wonderful...and that's just it's people ;)

Where have the mosquitoes gone in Limassol?

Postby Tim Drayton » Fri Aug 24, 2007 5:09 pm

I don't know about anybody else, but I have noticed that there are no mosquitoes here this year. Usually I need to have the repellent in the power socket at night, but this year it has gone unused because there aren't any. I thought it might have something to do with the drought.
By the way, I frequently hike in the hills and nothing has ever bitten or stung me.

The Cyprus hornet looks like the one in the pic below

Not only their sting but their bite is also dangerous because they carry so many germs.

Their sting is acidic whereas a bee's sting is basic. So, only use vinegar with a bee's sting. If allergic, extra care is needed with an injection at the ready.

By the way, hornets seem to be attracted by pomegranates and their season is fast approaching (September). Best way to confront them is with a badminton racket using a "drive" shot. Their head just drops off or the thin line between the abdomen and the thorax.

Sprays are only good indoors, for Christ sake. Make sure it is ozone friendly, too.

The Praying Mantis is one of my favorite insects. You can read about it here if you like…

http://www.insecta-inspecta.com/mantids ... index.html

..and I’ll also quote from that same page something everyone should know because people often confuse them with locusts and unfortunately kill them…

BENEFICIAL OR NOT?

Most often people think mantises are pests. That is only partly true. They can be beneficial, too. Praying mantises are terrific pest exterminators. They keep down the population of bugs that are a threat to farming. A master of disguise, the praying mantis can be an able assistant to farmer and gardener. Look carefully in your backyard. Perhaps that deceptive shape is a praying mantis poised for his next meal.

small ziziros (don't know their English name)

 It's called a Cicada and it happens to be the noisiest insect in the world!
