Abramovich ‘plans $30 million Chelsea village in north’
By John Leonidou
RUSSIAN billionaire Roman Abramovich is set to invest around $30 million to build a 225-villa complex for wealthy Russians in northern Cyprus, reports from Turkey have claimed.
Turkish business paper Referans said Abramovich, best known for his ownership of Chelsea football club, has been interested in building the giant complex for several years now, having already paid $5 million for a plot of land in the Klepini area of Kyrenia last year.
But the Russian news agency RIA Novosti quoted John Man, Abramovich's spokesman, as saying the rumours about a Chelsea village were untrue. Mann also denied reports that Abramovich was eyeing the tourism business in Turkey.
The billionaire's spokesman said he thought the information might have emerged in an attempt to publicise certain regions by associating them with a famous person.
Nevertheless, the reports have caught the attention of the Foreign Ministry, which yesterday revealed they were “keeping an eye on the developments”.
According to the report, the complex is to be called ‘Chelsea Village’.
The English language Turkish Daily News said yesterday that Abramovich, who was in the north two weeks ago, was also said to have been looking into the possibility of building a 38-storey hotel in Kyrenia, but eventually gave up on the idea.
The tycoon businessman has already been investing heavily in Turkey and rumours of his possible activities spreading to the north are receiving a mixed reaction, according to TDN.
“In investments where a foreigner constructs property and sells it to another foreigner, keeping the profit himself, the impact on local economy can hardly be positive,” one Turkish Cypriot developer was quoted as saying.
But another developer in the north was more upbeat: “Any investment in northern Cyprus is good. I believe this project will keep the local economy going, especially if the project employs local labour force and tradesmen to sell the villas.”
In Nicosia, the Foreign Ministry said it was monitoring the situation.
“The government’s position to building in the occupied area is known to all,” said Foreign Ministry official Alexandros Zinonos. “We are aware of the reports and we are obviously looking into the matter.”
