Soldier shouts halt twice, then fires a warning shot, then wounds/kills the obviously mentally unbalanced person who is under the influence of drugs and alcohol. "Soldiers execute mentally handicapped" would be the headline. Soldiers would also go to jail for homicide. There is also another scenario, where the mentally unbalanced person attacks and kills a soldier and the headlines would scream "recruit slain by maniac" etc. In either case there would be political repercussions.

Conclusion- political cost has clouded the rules of engagement at every level of the army, from the individual recruit and up.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF YOU ..BEING CONFUSED I THINK

AT NO TIME ...CAN YOU ALLOW FOR SUCH CIRCUMSTANCES ..WHAT WOUND HAPPEN IF HE GOT THE GUN ..SHOT ALL THE SOLDIERS ...WALKED UP THE ROAD AND KILLED A FEW DOZEN CIVILLIANS ...ILL LET YOU MAKE YOU OWN HEADLINES

NIKITA ...CLEARLY YOU HAVE NEVER DONE NATIONAL SERVICE ....I HAVE LIKE EVERY GREEK CYPRIOT ON THE ISLAND ...THE LAWS APPLIED ARE APPLIED AROUND THE WORLD

NEVER EVER ALLOW YOUR GUN TO BE LOST OR STOLEN ...

THE PROCEDURE IS LIKE I SAID ...IF HE DOES NOT IDENTIFY HIMSELF ...BANG ...DEAD ,COMMON RULES ...COMMON UNDERSTANDING ...

FOR EXAMPLE THE TCYPS .. MILITARY HAVE A RULE ... YOU LOOSE YOUR GUN ..YOU GO TO PRISON AND YOU REDO YOUR NATIONAL SERVICE

NIKITA ...CLEARLY YOU LIVE IN ATHENS /GREECE ...FEEL FREE TO WALK UP TO THE SOLDIERS THERE AND DO THE SAME THING ....PLEASE DO ...

How many of you have stories of mothers and fathers trying to pull strings to get their sons out of the NG or get them closer to home? Be like the Greek army, send them up to the Turkish boarders 6 hours drive from Athens!!!

They are all Butter Boys.

There will be stories now from worried parents that their sons are in danger of knife wielding maniacs and that the NG will need protection...Bloody joke!

I AM GLAD YOU SAID IT MATE ...BECAUSE THATS EXACTLY WHAT 65% OF THE CYP NATIONAL GUARD IS LIKE ...

THEN AGAIN IF I TOOK YOU AWAY FROM HOME AND MADE YOU LIVE IN PRISON STYLE CONDITIONS BUT WITH NO ACTUAL REAL TRAINING NOTHING TO DO ....SERIOUSLY NOTHING TO DO ... YOU WOULD BE LOOKING FOR OUT

THEY ARE THOUGH A BUNCH OF BUTTER BOYS ..AT 34 YEARS OF AGE A COUPLE OF YEARS BACK ...I AND TWO OTHER FORUM GUYS DID NATIONAL SERVICE .

I had to teach the kids how to mop ....clean their clothes and make their beds ...most of them are unhealthy (food is shite )
but best of all ...no discipline ...no real training ...unless you are in a specialised units or there are cameras coming

also for all you to know ...only a hand ful of armies teach confrontation training namely
ISREAL ,RUSSIA ,US,UK ,GERMANY ETC

At least the assailant did not take homicidal advantage and has probably done the services a favour by exposing laxity in the ranks.

The guard may have been a young man who's morale was at a low ebb on account of the futility of his duties, his assailant, an older man possibly on a mission of bravado attempting to highlight the futility.

All the military posturing along the borders is a complete waste of time since the Turkish forces could take the whole island in jig time, settle down lads, it is unlikely to happen.

BRO THAT IS IRELEVANT ... when cyprus ..created a army in 75 after the war ...ELLLAS ...trained our officers ...that training because of that " lazy culture" has been eroded "

as a helenic officer said on ERT today ...
NATO law
both the soldier disarmed and the idioit having a laugh should be jailed

also i might add i have absolute confidence ..that the report will show that the guy was totally sane ...but out on the razzle and decided to prove a point

Oranos,

What I meant is that the press reaction to any event in Cyprus, and Greece too, causes the politicians to fear the political cost, that is the votes, and hence the armed forces are never given clear orders and rules of engagement. The result is the type of bullshit that happened with the mental patient who stole the guns. No matter how the soldiers reacted there would be political cost.

As for the taking of arms from soldiers I would like to remind you that it has happened to Israeli soldiers often, the war in Lebanon last year started like that.

As for the military training I will not comment. But I will say that my research has shown that a lmajor poportion of training involves old fashioned parade ground square bashing. It seems that high brass in most armies are addicted to ego busting parade ground stuff. Is there any army that concentrates on the essential things a modern army needs to know as opposed to knowing how to salute etc? I wonder how much time could be saved from the national service time if army training were planned along time and motion studies.

Nikita ...the guy was not a mental patient ..but a local gangster type criminal ..i have an email by a senior police officer doubting the orignal statement .

I agree ..marching and parading seems to be the most important training aspect for the national guard ...

in 2009/10 ...the national guard will be able to apply for NATO MEMBERSHIP AND GO PROFESSIONAL ...AN ARMY OF OFFICERS ...like the rest of the world

HERES A STAT FOR YOU 3 OUT OF 10 GREEK CYP ARMY OFFICERS HAVE RESIGNED DUE TO THIS FUTURE OFFER ...They dont want to work for their £1000 cyp a month
a 1star major is on approx 1300 a month a good wage for cyprus ...

a soldier is on like £5 a week or somthing ...wheres the incentive ...no training ,no real information

tell you what ...in a summary ...the army is unorganised
