Bananiot, apologies, I thought you chose your name as a word play on Banana Republic, plus Cypriot= Bananiot.

Since 1974 I perceive a maturity in Greek Cypriot politics. Evidence is the smooth change from one president to the next, showing a move from the "ethnarchic" system to a democratic change of leadership. Each change was smooth and passion free. Since 1974 there has been a policy of consensus, which at times went too far (my opinion) but it has prevented hotheads from dragging us down to the level of other societies that face similar problems (look at Palestine). The list can go on, but I see T.Pap as part of this mature political establishment even though I probably would not be voting for him if I lived in Cyprus. All this was done without outside pressure or influence and today Cyprus stands alone, more independent of mainland Greek influence, a member of a demanding EU and able to claim its due.It is no small achievement for a nation under partial occupation in a volatile area of the world! We got to give credit where it is due.

I propose to surrender Cyprus to its people. Are you with me or against me, GR?

That is okay Nikitas, no hard feelings. Here is a list of what Papadopoulos did to get us to the EU and the Euro zone:

a) Signed the agreement

That's relative! From what I gather so far from your posts the Greek Cypriots who resist foreign powers aren't part of this group you refer to as "people of Cyprus"...

Care to elaborate? Which are the foreign powers that we are resisting? Is Papadopoulos one of those that resists them? Is this what he did when he signed the conclusions in October 2004 of the European Committee that said that Turkey should continue to offer her good offices in the effort ot find a solution? This kind of resistance is typical of defeatists, isn't it?

Here is the foreign power. Bloody foreign, as a matter of fact.

Bananiot

Re our entry into the EU, I had posted a thread titled "if not a thank you then at least a well done". Our entry into the EU was solely based on the vision and hard work one man, the late Yannos Kranidiotis. I expected that some kind of memorial, in terms of naming a street or square, would be devoted to his memory in both communities. That thought was not well received by the Turkish Cypriots here. Which I found strange because by any yardstick the entry was an achievement, probably our biggest since 1960. I guess we are not particularly good at honoring Cypriots in Cyprus.

So entry into the EU canot be atrtribute to any other person. But our behavior in the EU has been mature and if that sounds far fetched compare with the behavior of Greece during the 80s, Britain during Thatcher and Poland today. Cyprus is a moderate EU member and despite what the press says, well regarded by EU officials.

I do not agree with the assertion that we have behaved in a mature way in the European Union. For a start, we are known for our monothematic stance re Cyprob and our almost total absence from the debates on important issues like the discussions on the Constitution a couple of years ago. We have always viewed the EU as a vehicle that will vinticate our struggle. We are viwed upon as the black ship of Europe, more or less, and important people openly confess that it was a mistake to let us in with the problem unsolved. They reckon that we tricked them.
