It appears that many of my compatriots in Cyprus have an inflated concept of what constitutes a well dressed individual. Many , more so the females , dress as if attending a gala dance when popping in to the Supermarket. The proper way to dress , as far as I'm concerned , is to do so appropriately taking into account the extreme heat
and discomfort of overdressing in order to "conform " Look at those TV shows for instance and see how OTT some dress .

Going to super-markets can really give you an idea of what new outfits are on the market, especially not those for so-casual-beach-parties.
As for the shorts and churches, it's common sense not to enter a church in your shorts (that doesn't mean you have to undress and enter :D ), you better get a beer and relax. 8)

Its also common sense to conduct business appropriately dressed. I don't see bank employees in shorts, so neither should their customers be so attired. I consider a supermarket as a place of business. In fact, I just went down to the village one 10 minutes ago and both I and the supermarket owner were wearing longs. But I was in shorts 2 minutes before I left and 2 minutes after I got back. In fact, I don't go out anywhere in shorts.

Could not agree more. It amazes me to see the women at the local fruitmarket in heels staggering around loaded down with their purchase. They can hardly walk before they buy anything. Still it cheers up my Saturday watching them try.

The super-market it's not a church as far as I know. I would not go to super-market in my beach outfit but I go most of the times in super-markets in shorts, it's f... hot in Cyprus.
Banks I only visit at night, so I will use long dark pants. :D :D :D

Prithee, tell me why the supermarket owner and his male employees are in longs? It's just as hot for them as it is for you.

A few years ago I was invited by a relation to a garden party , by the swimming pool , it was August and the temperature was in the late 30s . I was astounded that people actualy came to the party wearing suits and ties !!
I turned up appropriately dressed in shorts . I have not been invited since .

If I were in my own bar or restaurant as manager I will impose long pants for employees, it's a matter of how my bussiness looks, but for clients that would not be a problem (everything for the client), except lets say some not casual dressing nights.

Do you think I don't respect them if I go in shorts in super-market? Does that make me what I am?

Why? They are doing business for me. Although personally I don't care what they dress in if they could reduce the damn queues. I used to do a lot of meetings with clients, and we always wore suits, but they used to wear whatever they liked. What is the difference?

I work as a programmer and one thing I always thought was seriously old fashion was the rule that we had to wear suits and ties. Considering we never saw any customers at the time, and that programmers often look like hermits if they get their own way (college basically), then I really didn't see the point. Tie that in with the fact that at the time they banned women from wearing trousers (only skirts and dresses) and you would think it was 1955, not 1995. They soon dropped those stupid ideas a few years later. Unfortuantly I work in travel and IT, and both fell to pieces just after 911, and the company that took us over also had draconian laws (not the skirt thing though). Now I contract from home, and where before I never wore shorts, I now have them on all the damn time. :) And yes, I look like a hermit most of the time... hmmm. What's my point again?...

Cheers
