Stuballstu,

That all very well to compensate all TC's who's land have been used in the South for public projects by the RoC, but what if the TC's who owned these lands in the South have already been compensated with GC land in the North. So you see, I don't think the RoC is going to be giving any money to any TC, unless there is a settlement, after the GC's get their lands back in the North. Unfortunately, it is not illegal to expropriate land by any government for public works in any country, and will even do it by force, if necessary, and they will only pay what is the market rate at that time. So if TC land was used for Larnaca airport 20 years ago, any money set aside for the owners of the land, will be at the rate it was 20 years ago, and not at any settlement date in the future. Yes, the owners will lose out on today's market price, had their land remained intact. But I can't see the RoC paying any TC for their land in the South, if these same people have gotten land in the North in "land exchange". That would be called "double dipping", if a solution was not found, which a TC would get cash for the land in the South, while holding onto GC land in the North.

Excellent point there Kikapu. I hate every single person who for the sake of greed 'sold on'. It was supposed to be illegal, yet they encouraged it. Very shortsighted and dirty business. I know many of these are applying yet again to the south reclaiming their properties again. Illegal in the North as well as the RoC. Grrrrr

Deniz,

When I talk about creating a "corrupt society" in the North, this is what I'm talking about, which has been encouraged by the "TRNC" authorities. All this just makes any solution just that much more difficult. One would have to be very naive and stupid not to think it is not done deliberately.

I will look into the land tax thing soon when we will have a family settlement of land. We have two pieces of land in Larnaca district somewhere, left unattended for some years. I will see what taxes are demanded for them. So far we were never asked for taxes. If what you say is true about Turkish Cypriots being asked for owed land tax then it sounds like a bit of a racket.

The enemy within. They cause so much damage to any solution.

Humanist TC's agreed to the last effort by the UN for a political settlement in Cyprus. Now we know that the TC who owns the land that Larnaca airport is built on is never getting his land back, he will get financial compensation instead. But why does he have to wait until a political solution to recieve compensation, why can't the government offer it to all the TC landowners who have had property used for public works. Would it be because there is more TC land being used than they want people to know about? As i said i disagree with the wholesale selling of GC property in the north, not only is it illegal it is immoral. I understand about public works compulsary purchases etc but land exploitation is also going on in the south. Please do go to Mandria and see it for yourself as an example. I can not comment on other places as I only have personal experience of what is happening in Mandria as we looked at buying property there. There are many GC who are living in denial that these practices are not going on in the south. They are. Many GC's will ignore it as it does not suit their arguement.

Stuballstu, don't you think that the Cyprus problem is messy enough without entering into a new phase of compensation and reimbursements. That is my own opinion and only mine a lay man. The other part od it essentially we are at war. There is no battle but we are at war, so I guess from a governement perspective it is difficule to reimburse your enemy. Although if we look at Iraq the US keeps buying weapons from the enemy factions. That is also a question you have to put to the RoC.

My understanding of TC land in the free areas of Cyprus is that it is under a protective trust and people caught violating this are penalised I have read cases where people have gone to gaol for it. My response to you if there is illegal sale of TC land in the free areas the thieves perpetrating these crimes need to be brought to justice and if that is the case then I would suggest that individual TC's whose land has been sold ought to take legal action such as the one taken by the refugees in the case of the British couple whose name I cannot even bring to my lips.
