How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

For those that dont like Tassos, what hope is there? Remember the Vassiliou presidency? Goerge Vassiliou was willing to talk about anything, if it was going to get dialog going, and willing to concede big time, and where did that get the Greek Cypriot side? Nowhere really. So blaming things on the personality of the Greek Cypriot leader sounds to many Cypriots like a cover for the hardline approach Turkey has assumed since 1974. There is always a reason not to concentrate on the substance of the issue and find side shows to delay and postpone.

Very enlightening post, Nikitas. Vasiliou, voted out because he would talk with the TCs. Then they vote in Tpap. That says a lot. GCs dont want to talk or a Re-unification. End of.

Why have you not spoken of the right sof GC's refugees to have access to teir properties if you are so fair as to request the compensation for the TC, if you feel so strongly about it why are you choosing to land @ Larnaca?

I think all refugees should have the rights to access or be compensated for their properties. Unfortunately in my opinion it is not going to happen that way. The tangled web of the Cyprus problem is deeply knotted and went on so long that some refugees will not want to return, some can't etc etc.

As for refugees who's land has been used for "public works" they are never going to have the right of return, so why not compensate them now?

As for me landing at Larnaca I don't have a personal issue. Much in the same way when I am walking around Kyrenia i don't ask if the pavement I am walking on belongs to a GC. What my point is that many GC's actively deter anyone visiting the "north" as most of it belonged to GC however don't mind landing in someone else's land. For me its double standards.

There is so much intransigence on both sides. The ROC government have been telling refugees what they have wanted to hear for the last god knows how many years. Talat and co say they want unification but every so often come out with one day the world will recognise us. Recognition for the TRNC?? There is as much chance as Anorthosis Famagusta winning the champions league.

It has always puzzled me why Papadopolous doesn't invite Talat to take his seat on the ROC government as the elected representative of the TC's as per the 1960 constitution? He would see how united Talat wanted Cyprus to be at that point

He might just take him up on that and that is why Stu

"The last of the Cyprians"
In a time of trouble when Greek invaders where fighting the Turkish invaders on Cyprus, a lost people appeared from the ashes. They were trading donkeys and halloumi cheese for thousand of years, have their own culture like souvla and pilota and speak the wonderful Cypriot language (which cannot be written by the way)... Are they the lost Atlantians? The sons of Aphrodite(but that is a greek godess it is foreign)

Who are we

The last of the Cyprians... a movie soon in a village near you .... nai tzame re koumpare nampou diladh en sou kamnei?

Deniz,

The succession did not go Vassiliou then Papadopoulos, there were the Clerides years in between, and not much happened then either.

Living away from Cyprus, as I do, there are statements made that lead one to hope, like that PR blitz during the Annan night at Burgentstock, when Erdogan was supposed to arrive with a territorial map showing Turkey's generosity, all of it aimed at the Greek press. There was nothing, zilch, and how could there be? Generosity with whose territory! It was a scam from the word go. The same rumour mill works regarding Famagusta from time to time with similar results- zilch.

Day after tomorrow there is hope for results, we will see what happens this time. But be advised to carry a very small basket.

Thanks for your post. I will not forget Clerides, the mate of Denktash. Obviously I was not referring to the succession, just to the personalities affecting our lives.

I always hoped that Cypriots would determine their own future without the Bigger participants. As I said before I dont trust politicians, any kind.
