You think that there would be any politically acceptable cover for attacking the Republic of Cyprus free areas in a military operation? I think not, there is no valid excuse and the act itself would invoke the doctrine of European solidarity, if not in military at least in political terms.

More frigthening is the prospect of civil strife in the north. Some might gloat with the prospect but this would be a humanitarian disaster for the Turkish Cypriots, they would have no escape. They would either be forced to leave the north and come south, which most do not want to do (let us be realistic on this) or leave the island altogether. The erasing of Turkish Cypriots from the island is a disaster for all communities regardless what some super nationalists here say.

A situation like that amost automatically leads to double union. I think (hope?) you overrating mr Ahmet Yonluer's influence and patronage.

The world is run by global capitalist interest now,Nikitas.
If they need Turkey to take over the whole island for some reason,they will find a cover. Put it this way.The settlers now outnumber the TCs 2 to 1. That is a death blow for the TC identity but they will just melt into the big Turkish sea and disappear. Then GCs will be facing the 75 million Turks full on...Can you really see any European country putting their principles ahead of their economic interests and defend Cyprus???

I too hope I am overrating Yonluer's potential role and influence.

Ahmet Yonluer,the Muftu (Chief religious officer) of Trnc has just resigned from his position in order to pursue a political career...

For the uninitiated,this is the person who is the most trusted man in the NOrth of a certain Tayyip Erdogan,also known as the Prime Minister of Turkey...He was the man named as being instumental in the demise of the previous CTP-DP coalition government.He has supposedly organised the defection of MPs from DP and UBP,and the founding of the ORP party,which is the junior partner in the present CTP-ORP coalition...

And what was this aspiring politician's first political utterance???
He claimed that the Turkish settlers in the North were being discriminating against!!! And he promised to make it his business to help improve the lot of these poor individuals...So you have heard it here first...The people who have been brought to the island to outnumber the TCs and take away their political power;the people who have turned the roads in the North into killing fields;the people who run the casinos,the gambling joints and the brothels;and the people who were given freely GC refugee lands and became rich selling them to the foreigners now have the status of being disadvantaged. And they have a defender in Mr Ahmet Yonluer,Erdogan's hatchet man in the trnc...Sit back and watch the rise and rise of this man of the moment...

I wouldnt panic about Mr.Yonluer if i was you..As we say in Turkish...when it comes to politics "Ates olsa oldugu yeri yakamaz"

an interesting article today from sener levent
he refers to the point of discussion , and he comments on the term "bicomunal north cyprus". the term was used apparently from a turkish magazine "tempo". it would be interesting to know what they wrote, and if it is a serious magazine.

Thanks for giving the link to Sener Levent's article. He is a commentator I read regularly but I had missed that particular article.

His view is insightful. It is amazing that a Turkish magazine would use the term "bicommunal" to describe the north of Cyprus. Tempo is a mainland Turkish magazine, of a fairly high circulation as far as I know but won't swear to it. The term "bicommunal" shows a view towards Turkish Cypriots that borders on condescension. And as S.Levent points out, the Turkish Cypriots have managed to become a minority in their own island not in comparison to Greeks but to mainland Turks.

The numbers, 160 000 settlers, 80 000 Turkish Cypriots (given by Levent) are what I had in mind re the Annan plan that provided no incentives to encourage Turkish Cypriots of the diaspora to return to Cyprus and settle in the north. It focused only on legalising settlers.

IN the future I would no be surprised to see more and more Turkish Cypriots coming to live in the south, as they are entitled to do. Not because they love us, but because the system is just so weighted against them in the north.
