RoC Independance Day

Postby erolz » Sun Aug 19, 2007 7:34 pm

Does anyone know why this is clebrated on the 1st October when thr date for when the RoC came into existance was the 16th August (as I understand it). Did something 'else' happen on the 1st October or is there some reason why this was chosen as Independance day ?

This is not a political question (as far I know anyway) I am just curious.

Thanks

I think it's the date they got independance from Britain in 1960.

Someone will be along to correct me if I'm wrong.

Probably because the 16th of August is bang in the middle of the holidays and Cypriots would completely ignore it. However, an extra day of holidays on October 1st is also welcome by schools and educators.

If it is loaded I have no idea what it is loaded with. I can not find any explaination for why the descrepancy, political or otherwise and to date Bananiot's suggestions is as good as any I have seen or been able to find, in fact it is the ONLY explaination I have seen or been able to find to date.

Similarly, the coup anniversary (and those that fell fighting the coupists) is commemorated in November, not on July 15, the exact day of the coup.
