Speaking exclusively to the London Turkish Gazette after a meeting with Embargoed! and Çetinkaya representatives, FARE director Piara Power said he believes the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus should have its own recognised football association.
He said: "At the heart of the issue is an injustice and this reflects the situation in North Cypus in general. For instance, it reflects the fact that things have been lumbering along for so long and that political ramblings are preventing people from moving on with their lives.
“Football in particular is an interesting mirror as to what is going on in our societies and this particular situation highlights the way in which, certainly this football club, (Çetinkaya) and Turkish Cypriots in general are not being able to realise their full potential.”
Mr Power added: “There is no room for development or investment. Even though it is a political issue, common sense and humanitarian feelings should dictate that this issue should be sorted out sooner rather than later."
Asked about the common language and grounds that sport creates among communities, he said: "A lot of people who buy into Football would not be able to understand this curtailing of the freedom to play. The ability and freedom to play is the central notion of any sport. If you’re a competitor, you want to compete."
"What can be said is that the Cypriot FA should not have the right of veto over TRNC teams playing nationally – that’s wrong. As a governing body you have rights and responsibilities to nurture, develop and give people opportunities. To prevent people from making contact and not to offer a good pro quo is an absolute injustice."
He went on: "Given the constitution of Cyprus, with borders in place, there should be a North Cyprus FA and a South Cyprus FA. They should have the status of a governing body and be taking positions within UEFA. They should have the right to veto within their own countries, not over each other. [The current situation] just doesn't make sense.
Mr Power also commended Luton Town FC who did everything in their powers to play a match with Çetinkaya last month, but said he understands why in the end they could not play the game.
Asked about the racism body’s future objectives and targets he commented: "We're looking to work with Embargoed! here and the guys from Çetinkaya to see if we can raise awareness of those issues and whether we can play a role in brokering a positive change.
“We know that FIFA are interested in moving forward but the mechanism needs to be right. We know that UEFA are concerned and that Çetinkaya have confirmation at the highest levels that they want things resolved. I think we need to keep pushing and raise the issues in a campaigning way in order to navigate forwards.
“The football governing bodies are unfortunately riven by politics, riven by internal power structures, and we can fall victim to those structures rather easily and I hope that this doesn't happen this time. It seems to me that this has been going on too long."
