President Mehmet Ali Talat has stressed that a new era of ‘fierce bargaining’ is to kick off on the Cyprus issue.
The President made the statement during a speech at the liberation ceremony held in Gazimagusa yesterday to mark the town’s 33rd anniversary of liberation.
In his speech, the President stated that in the new era the Cyprus issue will be taken up on a basis different from the Annan Plan.
President Mehmet Ali Talat said the Annan Plan was negotiated in a limited time frame due to the time restrictions emerged as a result of the European Union membership of South Cyprus at the time, and thus, a proper bargaining could not be made between the two sides.
‘We were able to explain our position only through a mediator’ he said, adding that this will not be the case from now on.
Mr Talat said the two sides might not feel the need to explain their interests through a mediator in the new era which is to be marked by a period of fierce bargaining.
