My hybrid car: impressions

You're wrong. Even if it were a new driver who bought my old car, it will be off the road in 2-4 years time and recycled. I did imply that it will take years before a dent is made in the pollution. I don't expect miracles overnight but if each of us doesn't make a little improvement here and another there (e.g., economy light bulbs, Class A appliances etc.), then nothing will ever get done.

I was mandated by the Swiss Federal Office of the Environment and the UNEP for many years (in fact, I'll be receiving UNEP's most prestigious award next month for my work, if you'll excuse the boast), so I do know a wee bit of how the environment works.

It will only make a difference when your old car is taken of the road and recycled. Currently, it is probably producing pollution in parallel with your new car – what if the new owner keeps it going for another ten or fifteen years before getting rid of it?.

In the meanwhile your claims to have made an improvement are void. You can only make that claim once your old car is removed from the system.

I think we have to be very, very careful about our claims to be ‘green’ and making an improvement to the environment when very often those claims are bogus.

Economy light bubs are another area (as you mention it). The EU is going to ban ‘ordinary’ bulbs yet clearly many thousands (indeed probably millions) of light fittings will not accept economy bulbs. Therefore people will have to buy new fittings at an enormous economic and environmental cost.

In addition, ordinary light bubs consist of a bit of glass, a tungsten filament and a bit of tin or whatever the fitting is made of. An economy bulb has a big lump of plastic, some glass, phosphor and a myriad of electronic components – none of which are likely to ever be recycled and will be highly polluting. in addition, most of the bulbs are manufactured in the far east and brought to Europe in ships burning the most polluting fuels.

I’m all for reducing our energy needs (and saving me money if possible) but the current green ‘mantra’ simply doesn’t make sense in many areas and is designed in my opinion to confuse the public which charging them extr4a for the privilege.

Explain why governments around the world are urging us to ‘go green’ while in parallel continuing to encourage growth of their home economies and populations? Why is the UK government advising the population to switch their TV’s off at the mains while building three million new homes, encouraging immigration and building new airport runways to expand aviation.

I see nobody who has left the UK disagrees.....the real worrying thing is they could get back in again.......... just how gullible is the British nation?????....see in the papers today that there are now 10 million Brits not working/sick/whatever....... yet the Immigration Door to 'Free-handoutland' remains wide open. What a shit place the UK has become with more Poles there than in Poland!

I think everyone should buy a Jeep Wrangler - great for pavement parking in Cyprus and it's the Greenest car on the planet :)

All working and doing the jobs that the lazy Brits will not do. I work in their houses every day and I see what happens. Saw a lovely looking Polish girl sweeping the roads the other day and she was actually doing a good job and not spending the whole day in a cafe. I am sure the great British disease will get to her soon though.

Zan. You are a nob-end!

Why dont they f*** off back to Poland then and sweep roads there? Would you cross Europe to sweep roads??? Their cheap imort labour f****** my business after 20 years hard graft. So dont lecture me about hard work!

They're sponging our healthcare, social services, schools, doctors, dentists, housing. My son his girlfriend and child cannot get a council house because they are all given away to foreigners. NHS dentist places have been given to them. Me? I have to go private. In my own country! While a scavenging foreigner gets treated for less.

If thats your attitude perhaps you wont mind if Cyprus pays me social benefits, gives me free healthcare, starts a free school for english children, gives me housing benefits, buys me a car and provides me with a free mobile phone.

No? I thought not. Be quiet because you obviously dont have a clue what you are talking about!

I would be more than happy for Cyprus to adopt these benefits and I think they are rich enough to do so but you should not abuse them as some do. I can speak from experience as to who I see most of sitting on their arses claiming benefits and it is not the polish mate. They certainly get a helping hand but most that can work do. They are not ashamed to do the work either. My job is also threatened by them but I don't sit around a weep for raking it in all these years. I am fed up seeing small businesses trying to become rich over night by charging extortionate prices. No one wants to work for a fair price anymore and are blaming those that will for it. Stop moaning and adapt. My prices have not changed in over ten years and I have kept working because of that. Others want to come in with over inflated prices then it is a war they are going to lose. I can speak from experience mate because I have been in the building trade for 30 years and have seen the guys sitting in the cafes all day and doing the bare minimum of work. They hated us that were self employed and workers. We ate in twenty minutes and were back to work and grafting. There are still some of those lazy gits around today.
