Apparently it dates back to times when if you managed to keep a long finger nail meant you didn't work in the fields ie manual worker. Yes, it is regarded by the Horkatisa as a status symbol. I, however, think karma's definition is more appropriate.

And twinkle was right is the two characteristics of the Village attitude not that is bad to come from a village but you can show that with better way eg hospitality, food etc.
