Cyprus ‘looking to buy new tanks’

OFFICIALS were quiet yesterday on reports that the Defence Ministry was planning to purchase 41 new tanks for £40 million.
Politis reported that the tenders` board was evaluating offers by French, Russian and Ukrainian companies for the tanks. It said the applications were at an advanced stage, having begun 10 months ago

The Russian company Rosobonexport was named for the supply of T80 tanks. The others were said to be the French firm GIAT to supply AMH30 V2 tanks, and an unnamed Ukranian company that would also supply T80s.
Politis said that for the first time, a German company, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), had also expressed an interest in supplying Leopard tanks following the lifting of the German embargo on arms sales to Cyprus last December due to Cyprus’ EU membership. However, an application was not submitted in the end.

Sources in the Defence Ministry told the paper that all the possibilities would be taken into consideration when it came to choosing the tanks, such as suitability and technical back-up and support.

Because the issue should go to Parliament, Politis said it contacted members of the House Defence Committee who said they had not been briefed that the National Guard was seeking new tanks, other than a reference in the budgets last December.

Neither Defence Minster Chrisodoulos Pashiardis not Government Spokesman Vassilis Palmas could be reached for comment on the report yesterday.

Propably they are used however who knows? They seem quite cheap though, the average price for new tanks is at least 3 times more. For example the Japanese Type 90 MBT is about $8 mil and the Greek Leopard 2A6 variant $10-12 mil

FOREIGN MINISTER AVCI CALLED ON GREEK CYPRIOTS TO ABANDON ITS INTRANSIGENCE AND ARMAMENT POLICIES

Deputy Prime Minister-Foreign Minister Turgay Avci has called on the Greek Cypriot Administration to give up its intransigence and armament policies.

Meanwhile, Mr Avci returned to the Republic today after completing his contacts in the Syrian capital Damascus.

In a written statement, Deputy Prime Minister-Foreign Minister Turgay Avci pointed to the Greek Cypriot Administration’s latest initiative to buy 41 new tanks for the military and said this has once again proved the need for the presence of the Turkish Armed Forces in Cyprus.

Mr Avci also stated that this initiative by the Greek Cypriot Side shows the real aim of the Greek Cypriot Leader Tasos Papapdopulos at a time when constructive efforts by the Turkish Cypriot Side is continuing towards finding a just and comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

In his statement, Mr Avci said it is understood that Mr Papadopulos who was one of the pioneers of the Akritas plan which caused bloodshed in Cyprus between 1963 and 1974 does not hesitate to lead his people into a disaster for the sake of his own interests.

Noting that Greek Cypriot Side’s fake attitude on the solution of the Cyprus problem only serves to mislead the international community, Turgay Avci called on the Greek Cypriot Administration to give up its armament and intransigence policy.

Meanwhile, Mr Avci and his accompanying delegation who had series of contacts in the Syrian capital Damascus returned to the republic.

Don't worry Paaul12, because these Tanks only have a Catapult as an armament, which shoots off only watermelons.

Turkey = 80,000,000 people. Has a very good chance of protecting it self against most attackers.

'RoC" = They would only piss the attackers off more........

No country can go into war without first securing it's borders. If Turkey goes into war in Cyprus chances are she will turn her soldiers back to avoid losing more of her own lands.War is an extremely unstable situation for ANY country that starts it.

Now what they are doing here with all these armaments is exactly this. They don't ever hope they will start a war against Turkey. All they are doing is prevent Turkey from starting a war against us or she will lose more than what she will gain, either here or elsewhere.
