GR ........ thanks for posting the said agreement. It is probably the first time that I paid much thought to it and really reflect on what it says.
Can it be applied in a European Cyprus? Well yes it can. Can it work probably. I believe that the 60's agrement did not work for a reason we need to explore that reason and then work on the issues. It can be appl and ifact I think it would be modifficult to breach/ break because with EU being the overseeing body of what happens in Europe it will be difficult to manipulate the agreement.
As far as the guarantors go I believe that Greece and Turkey ought to be excluded. This involvement creates a them and us attitutde which builds fear mistrust and a separation. Cyprus needs to rebuild itself as aCyprus for all cypriots not based on ethnicty or linguistic background. Unitl such time that Cypriots grow up and have the will to fight for a unique identity built upon its human resources cultural and linguistic uniquenes there will always be a Cyprus problem. Until Cypriots one by one denounce their allegiance to either Greece or Turkey and create a new Cyprus for Cypriots I am afraid it will be to its demise.
On a broader level I believe the agreement of the 60's is discriminatory. It staes that the president ought to be Greek speaking and Vice President Turkish. Thisd not only discriminates against those of Turkish linguistic cultural grouping but furthermore it excludes other Cypriots. Why not therefore create something new where anyone can become a president of our nation if they have the atributes and their pcies reflect of afair just equal society. The agreement is undemocratic in that t denies Tush speakiNG Cypriots from becoming President and also non Greek and Turkish Cypriots ie, Maronite, Jewish or Armenian.
However, I believe it is a god start for a change in the Cyprus structure as it exists today. I believe that Turkish Cypriots ought to be welcomed back to the governement and take up the positions to advcate and represent the community as a temporary way of life in a new Cyprus that would pave the way for more comprehnsive agreement and constitution.
For this to occur the RoC needs to do two basic changes one is the anthem and two the Greek flag issue. Without necesarily caring what the occupied area does or not. If they want to fly the Tush flag that is their choice, rember that they may not have a choice. Or think they have no choice because at their request to join the RoC Turkey wil have no option but to withdraw its troops. With the US passing a bill to end the Tuish occupation of Cyprus this would make it difficult for Turkey to argue otherwise. She then gets EU membership and all is happy in the mediteranian.
