like i said many many times in this forum.the zurich agreement was designed to devide the island, a document and decrees and laws that are impossible to work, thus clearign the way for the island to be devided into 4 you have the north, the green line the south and the british bases, cyprus chopped up into little peaces for the benefit of other countries, what did cyprus get from all this. nothing, oppssss i forgot they got their turkish and greekness, and people say to me are you greek or turkish , are you from the north or the south, its bit like someone saying to you this is your daughter or your son and they ask you waht part of your dughter or son is yours top or bottom half. my cyprus is one in my ,its simlpe as that

I suspect the 13 points were suggested at a time when "democracy" was anathema to Turks and Turkish Cypriots...

the thirteen points were one of the biggest mistakes makarios did.

and this has not so much to do with the points themselves (with exception one or two, the rest were not against tc interests). it has more to do with a political act that took place in complete wrong time and under completely unfavourable circumstances

Besides, you cannot go back on your signature, hardly before the ink had time to dry out. Not only the timing was wrong but most importantly it was unethical, because it was unilateral and did not take into consideration our partners and their aspirations at the time. Before someone stupidly claims that they were just proposals that one could reject or accept, let me point out that we intented to force them down their throat regardless. To this end would act the "organisation".

Now that we have seen the GR comedy show - let us look at the realities of what actually happened:

GR quotes what Makarious proposed in November 1963, when he was trying to pacify Turkey by looking the good guy. This was some 3-4 weeks before GCs started attacking Turkish occupied areas and the start of Cyprus problem as we now know it!

By then he must have (as well as all his followers) known what was about to happen in few weeks time. The actual changes which were probably less than 13, were demanded back in January of 1963 - possibly late 1962.

These demands were made after persistent fanatic speeches by Makarios and his subordinates, featuring EOKA and ENOSIS!

In a speech on 4th September 1962, at Panayia, Makarios actually said “Until this Turkish community forming part of the Turkish race which has been the terrible enemy of Hellenism is expelled, the duty of the heroes of EOKA can never be considered as terminated."

Article 173 of the Constitution provided that separate municipalities be established for Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots. The Greek Cypriots refused to obey this provision, so the Turkish Cypriots took the matter to the Supreme Constitutional Court of Cyprus.

In February 1963 (Cyprus Mail 12.2.63) Archbishop Makarios declared on behalf of the Greek Cypriots that if the Court ruled against them they would ignore it. On 25th April 1963 the Court did rule against them and they did ignore it. The neutral President of the Court (a German citizen) resigned and the rule of law in Cyprus collapsed.

Christmas 1963 the Greek Cypriot militia attacked Turkish Cypriot communities across the island, and very many men, women and children were killed. On 2nd January 1964 the Daily Telegraph wrote "The Greek Cypriot community should not assume that the British military presence can or should secure them against Turkish intervention if they persecute the Turkish Cypriots. We must not be a shelter for double-crossers."

I do not think there is any need to quote anything further. I hope now everyone knows where to stick the 13 constitutional changes Makarios proposed!

How many times must I embarrass you?

Oh no! Another "Makarios said..." invention of Michael Stephen again!!!

Proudly adopted by many "fine" sites including the Assembly of Turkish American Associations:

I do not think there is any need to quote anything further. I hope now everyone knows where to stick the 13 constitutional changes Makarios proposed!

Correction: Everyone knows where to stick your posts!

It's a constitution for Christ's sake! If it can NEVER be amended and/or extended I pity the country that adopted it! So much for democracy!
