Galadari: The Turkish Cypriots say that Mr Papadopoulos is a hard liner.
Papadopoulos: From the beginning, they were planning for a separation. But, in fact, the Turkish Cypriots were the ones who committed massacres and in 1963 we asked to increase the police patrols, but they refused. From 1963 to 1974, how many Turkish Cypriots were killed? The answer is, none.
Papadopoulos is the worse type of a liar and Pyrpolyser, you will have a hard time defending his lies. I do not envy you.
Now, one must remember that the period we are examining was immediately after the EOKA struggle. Do not forget that we embarked on an armed struggle for enosis which ended without success only a few months before. We were not ready to bury the dream just yet. Enosis was high on the agenda, in fact, it was the only issue on the agenda. We never accepted the London-Zurich agreements, not because they did not provide for a truly independent Cyprus but because we had our sight firmly turned towards Greece. Had we, the dominant community, accepted that enosis was a forlorn hope and that a united independent Cyprus was the order of the day, no Denktash or any other hard liner from the Turkish Cypriot community, could have disturbed the peace in Cyprus. Our actions armed the extremists and the partitionists who in turn fuelled the intercommunal hate and thus we arrived at the de facto partition which our President is trying hard to consolidate because he thinks that it is, under the circumstances, the second best solution (Helsinki speech).
