Makarios' "13 Points" (November 1963)

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Pyrpolizer » Wed Aug 08, 2007 3:30 pm

In a speech on 4th September 1962, at Panayia, Makarios actually said “Until this Turkish community forming part of the Turkish race which has been the terrible enemy of Hellenism is expelled, the duty of the heroes of EOKA can never be considered as terminated."

I see this snip repeated over and over again. The fact is there is NO PROOF Makarios said that. The one and only who FIRST made that claim were the Rustem Bros (are they the owners of the known bookshop?). It never appeared in any GC newspapers, or tape recording.

Suprisingly it spread everywhere you can imagine even translated in Greek. I believe the Cyprus conflict web-site has not adopted it though

Unless Bigoz deletes his word file of "Makarios quotes" he purchased on CD at a Turkish panagiri you'll be seeing a lot more of them I'm afraid...

No need to be afraid of quotes guys. The article is also quoted in Mr Denktas' book and a very good friend of mine is getting in touch with the great man for proof. I think the date was actually 63 but we shall have it confirmed. Perhaps Mr Denktas has a copy of the original letter that he sent to a few places in protest after the speech. Hold on to your hats. It may never happen but............. You can have some fun with it until then.

Perhaps you would like to challenge the other quotes on their own merit now.....

Oh no! Another "Makarios said..." invention of Michael Stephen again!!!

Proudly adopted by many "fine" sites including the Assembly of Turkish American Associations:

http://www.ataa.org/reference/trnc/genocide_trnc.html

I do not think there is any need to quote anything further. I hope now everyone knows where to stick the 13 constitutional changes Makarios proposed!

Correction: Everyone knows where to stick your posts!

On the contrary you have embarrased yourself by proving to all what a fool you are everytime you dared to take me on - sorry but I find you an amusing light weight debator in these waters.Image

here is a challenge for you We both deposit 4000 Euros in DT's account for a bet and the winner takes the money. HERE IS THE BET:

for 1000 Euros: I will obtain a printout of Makarios' speech at Panayia from a media source (Greek or English) and display a copy here.

for 1000 Euros: I will obtain a copy of the Daily Telegraph's edition that says on 2nd January 1964; "The Greek Cypriot community should not assume that the British military presence can or should secure them against Turkish intervention if they persecute the Turkish Cypriots. We must not be a shelter for double-crossers."

for 1000 Euros: I will display a copy of Cyprus Mail 12.2.63 edition that states Archbishop Makarios declared on behalf of the Greek Cypriots that if the Court ruled against them they would ignore it.

for 1000 Euros: I will obtain and display a document proving "On 25th April 1963 Cyprus Constitutional Court did rule against them and Makarios did ignore it. + The neutral President of the Court (a German citizen) resigned.

My time is money and I will not spend it trying to educate you all the time. Let me know when you are ready and put your money where your mouth is! As for sticking things, stop talking on behalf of everyone when no one has chosen you to do so! Since when have the "dufus" of the forum has become a spokesman!

I personally know exactly where to stick those points, but I may have alittle difficulty because with so much garbage coming out of your mouth it is a little hard to tell your head from your tail. Image

Let's not hide behind our fingers. I am old enough to know that many bad things were said about the Turkish Cypriot community back in the late 50's and 60's because we viewed them merely as enemies of our enosis dream. It may not be so evident now but back then enosis was more than a slogan. It was an aspiration that filled the hearts and minds of Greek Cypriots totally with emotion and will to struggle for its implementation. We lived and breathed for enosis. It was the perpetual aspiration. It was virtually in our genes. It may be difficult to understand now but back then the enosis cause was our reason for existence. Thus, I wouldn't be surprised if Makarios had said those horrible words. It was the proper thing to do at the time.

Get Real, it was not just an attempt to amend a constitution. It had wider implications and the proof is the present day predicament. Even Inonu, almost fatherly, pleated with Makarios not to go along with his proposals, when the latter went on a state visit to Turkey in 1962. Makarios wouldn't listen and went ahead with his proposals. Now, the official line, is to blame the Brits for the 13 points. Actually the Ambassador, who played a dirty trick on his beautitude.

Denktash made his letters BASED ON Rustem Bros' claim.

In other words what Denktash says in his book is not a proof. It goes like this Zan: The Rustems tell some nonsense without proof.Denktash makes protest letters for that nonsense without providing any proof also.
In fact one of the people he sent his letters was Makarios. The latter did not even bother replying.8)

Btw I just made a complete search in Cyprus conflict web site. As you all know this is a high standard site that publishes only verified and doubled confirmed documents. IT HAS NOTHING ABOUT IT.

NB. You are turning into the No1 panayirdji/bayramdji of the forum Zan

What are you talking about man? This enosis thing was only in the minds of some wise high school students/graduates and priests who at that time thought they discovered the new world. The vast majority of plain people would not give a shit about it, they were just hearing the "enlightened" shouting enosis-enosis they thought "well if so many enlightened say so, it must be a good thing".But to go further than that and say that we were living and breathing for enosis is nothing but a generalisation.

Are you talking for yourself by any chance?

Pyrpolizer, talking about "panayirdji/bayramdji", I remembered about the old panayirs I used to attend in Limassol - Paphos area, when my relatives would buy something called "porto". It was made form something (probably carob or grape juice - but I am not sure) and had sesame seeds in it. It had a bitter sweet taste and was textured like honey. It tasted great with toasted bread and "hellim" cheese. I had been asking in the North but no one seems to remember exactly what it is and how it was made.

It was popular in the villages around Evdim and Paramal. Do you or anyone else know what I am talking about. If so please let us know where it can be bought from.
