I thought it was for the WMD

WMD=terrorism

No WMD, therefore no terrorism. You said it my dear.

A couple of individuals in the current Bush administration <cough - Cheney, Rumsfeld> were among the principals that sold the weapons to Iraq in the first place. Hussein had the weapons at one point and managed to get rid of them from under everyone's noses. The Bush admin probably used WMD as an excuse to invade because they knew what they sold him and it should've been easy to prove.

My opinion is that Bush invaded Iraq strictly for base reasons - a quick win there (and it should've been quick as they had no reasonable defenses) would've had him strutting around as a big tough guy on terrorism, and going on about how inept and useless the UN is. God only knows what else they would've tried to do with their cowboy tactics. Any case, while oil is an issue in Iraq now, I don't think they were concerned with stealing anything as a primary reason for invading. They were in it to stroke their egos.

The major reason that crude oil has increased in cost is because the dollar has decreased in value so drastically over the past few years. And yes, the actions of the Bush administration are largely responsible for the decline (heavy borrowing from other countries, M3 increases of 13-17% YoY, etc). So oil producing countries, faced with taking payments based on a deteriorating dollar, are demanding more dollars so that they don't get "Bushwhacked." While higher crude prices do translate to higher gasoline prices, a big portion of the increase in stateside gasoline prices has to do with stagnant American refining capacity in the face of increasing demand. It's the refining capacity by which the oil companies exert control over prices. That's why gasoline prices magically increase in the summer and on holidays, and decrease when there's an election.

Coming back to Cyprus, it's important to note that some oil pipelines (such as BTC) that ares strategically important to the western world, are routed through Turkey. So it's not in the interest of either Europe or the US to piss off the Turks too much. The bottom line is that the Turks hold a superior hand at the moment. And, unfortunately, any talks from the US of easing the Cyprob should be taken with a hearty helping of salt. If there is any truth behind it, I'll believe it when I see it - sad as I am to say it. The Bush admin will only get lovey dovey with you for one reason - and you'd better have some Vaseline.

are you serious?

you are getting the republicans confused with the democrats. the republican in office now only has a limited numbers of days left in office (510 days left!), and i predict democrats will hold the next office. things will change.....
